Melodie struggled to write her next letter to her pen-pal Jane, what could she talk about that they hadn't already? She tapped her pencil to her chin. They already talked about much of the gossip and talk at their separate schools, and the fact that they both were the same sexuality, lesbian. They admitted to each other through notes that they both were attracted to females, but never seemed to find the right person.
As the notes kept coming every week, Melodie was thrilled to read them all. Ever since her teacher started the "pen-pal experience program," she was partnered up with Jane from the nearby town, whom she talked to every week with letters, envelopes, that sort of stuff.
Through every single letter, though, she felt a ping of happiness, like butterflies fluttering in her chest. It wasn't like a normal everyday tremble, like those days where you get the nervous feeling of failing a test, but more of an excited feel.
She told Jane about her feelings about love, that she never really had much feelings for any of the boys at her school, but instead, found herself crushing on some of the girls. Jane replied back that she, too, felt the same way, which Melodie was shocked to hear. Her pen-pal was also attracted to females as well? They were both happy for each other coming out nevertheless.
Melodie was happy talking to Jane in letters, but secretly, deep down, she wanted to meet her in person, not just speak through envelopes. So, in the next letter she wrote to Jane, she wrote, "I would love to meet you in person, but I don't know how we'll be able to manage that..."
After a week of waiting, Jane's reply came through the mail. "I'd love to meet you too. Maybe we can meet in that café at the edge of town next Saturday afternoon? I don't want to force you, just let me know if you do."
Melodie felt a tiny (happy) squeak escape her lips. This was perfect! She had nothing to do on that Saturday, and she'll even meet her pen-pal! Writing back to her, she sealed the envelope, and put it in the mailbox with a clang.
That Saturday, she got ready early in the morning, she just couldn't hold her excitement. After months of letters from her, she sounded like a nice and sweet person to hang around. Maybe they could even be friends!
Brushing her long blonde hair back, Melodie tied them back with small, light pink ribbons, and wore her favorite outfit to match. She told her mother an "I love you" with a kiss, then headed to the café. It wasn't too far away, thank goodness, but still a bit of a drive away.
When she arrived at the café, she saw a few tables with people, talking and laughing, and kids eating tiny cakes (and somehow spreading frosting on their faces). She smiled at the sight, but kept her focus in finding Jane/waiting for her.
She spotted a female of her age waiting at a table at the far end of the café, talking to a female waitress with long, brown hair. She had short blonde hair tied in a small ponytail and a cute marking on the side of her cheek.
'Hmm, is that her?,' Melodie thought to herself as she walked over. She felt a slight ping of nervousness walking, her head felt a tiny bit dizzy. The blonde female noticed her as she approached the table.
"Hi!" she said with a smile. Melodie shyly smiled back, feeling a slight blush come upon her cheeks.
"Are you Jane?" Melodie asked quietly, hoping that she wasn't jumping to conclusions. Jane's face lit up at the name.
"M-hm! You must be Melodie, right?" she asked. Melodie nodded quickly, then turned away in embarrassment. She never thought that she would have a crush on her pen-pal, but she did.
"Is something the matter?" Jane asked, a slight feel of concern washed over her.
"N-no, everything's fine!" Melodie smiled. Jane looked slightly concerned, but replaced it with another smile.
Jane finally spoke, breaking the silence, "It's so nice to meet you after all those months of letters!"
Melodie felt her shyness wash away, and they talked for some time, until it got late in the afternoon, where it was time for them to go home before it got too dark.
As they were walking out of the café together, Melodie whispered, "Will we meet again after this?," her face reddening again. Jane smiled at that.
"Of course we will! Promise to send me more letters?"
Melodie laughed, the redness on her cheeks disappearing, "Obviously, I will! We are pen-pals for a reason, right?"
That night, Melodie felt that it was one of the happiest ones of her life.
