I watch the lapping waves wash up onto shore, sparkling in the evening sun. It's pretty peaceful living on the beach. I live here because my family works in the nearby lighthouse to guide boats and sailors back to shore. It's a pretty important job, and my family is sworn to guide them.
But as I glanced at the docks, I saw a flash of silver light just below the rocks, followed by a small splash. I can't describe it, but that silver flash looked magical. But that can't be true, fairy tales don't exist in real life.
I head back, as it was growing darker by the second. I thought I heard more splashing as I headed in, and I assumed that they were the fish living in this area.
Clicking the lighthouse door shut, I walked the long flight of stairs, which led to the top. The giant lantern-like object stood proudly, waiting for somebody to power it. I turned it on and shone it into the black, murky waters surrounding the lighthouse.
[CASH]
I watch the brunette-haired boy close the door to the tall house-thing. With a small splash, I swam closer to the rocks near the windows of the place, and crawled onto the slippery surface. My silver tail flicked specks of water with anticipation as the human made his way to the top of the building, and with a click, turned it on.
I watched in awe as he turned it, making light follow his every move. He always did this every single night, and I will never grow bored seeing it. Then, in a flash, he shone it in my direction. I couldn't let him see me, so I quickly dove back into the water. I watched from the depths of the ocean as he peered into the water, wondering what has made that splash.
I breathed a sigh of relief as I swam downwards to my home. Humans aren't supposed to see merpeople, they would betray them and kill them for a hefty price, my mother always told me. But of course, I am always curious about humans...
Quinn, my older sibling, swam up to me as I arrived back home, looking at me with suspicion lurking in their eyes.
"You didn't go up to those humans, did you?" they asked, holding my head with their hands sternly. I looked down in defeat as they sighed.
"Mom told us to never go up to the surface, it's dangerous!" Quinn said, shaking their head and taking me by the hand. I swam with them into our humble home, shaking out my bright, ginger-hair.

What was that sound? I thought I heard a nearby splash just now...
I- I must be imagining things...
I walked down the flight of stairs and walked to the small house nearby. I don't live in the lighthouse, if that's what you were wondering. We stay in a small cottage nearby, just in case of a flood near the lighthouse.
Jo was waiting outside, dragging me in.
"What took you so long?" she asked worriedly, brushing out my brown hair and peering onto my freckled face.
I have unusual orange freckles, which most of my family members don't have. My parents and family always told me that I was special that way, that my freckles helped me stand out. I thought they made me look weird, and I don't really like being the odd one out.
"I thought I heard something in the ocean, splashing," I said, pointing out the window to the darkened sea. She nodded her head slightly, then took me by the hand upstairs to our bedroom. Since this was a small cottage, we sleep in the same room.
I fell asleep as soon as my head touched my pillow.
[QUINN]
My brother always told me that he dreams of living on the surface with those humans, and hopes that humans and merpeople could get along someday. But that is highly unlikely, we've been in hiding for a very long time.
I stare at the above surface from the window of our home and sigh. I do hope that we can befriend the humans. I really do. But the chances are at a low, and our hopes might be sunk.
