Chapter Ten
It’s starting to sink
Inside my room where my socks full of one dollar bills was our destination, Mandy and I, we are going to spend that money buying her new sets of sneakers for her birthday present coming from me. Besides, I saw her shoes had that ripped when I was cleaning the shoe rack last night. I shouted shot gun on the shoes before Charles gets to it. He cursed and moaned when the shoe gift was taken. Now he had to think of something to give to our little sister.
It will only be a family dinner celebration with mom cooking all Mandy’s favorite food.
I would have loved to accompany Mandy buying her shoes but mom volunteered to shop with her instead. I still have a full time schedule this week that includes homework with Trench, assignment with my other subjects and my part time job in the shop. Like I said full scheds!
“Twenty would be enough” Mandy thrilled, counting the one dollar bills I gave her.
“Buy something cute okay!” I thrilled, hugging her beside me. Mandy was just too sweet to be ignored in her tenth birthday.
“No need to remind me, Sum” she waved and rolled her eyes adorably. I chuckled, pulled her in my bed and started tickling her to death.
She screamed her laughter while I proceed locking her in my legs and tickle her all over her body. We only stopped our fun when mom and dad shouted dinner is ready.
We were half way through dessert, Mandy and mom talking about something else, while I watched my dad just gawking at his food, his forehead crease into worries and his eyes have that defeat in them.
“Dad” I muttered, couldn’t help my voice sounding sad.
He looked up and smiled forcefully. I know he was once again showing that everything is fine look when we know it was the opposite of it. We suffered a buckle years ago and this is exactly what my dad’s face when that happened. Worries plastered all over his old face.
I’m sure he noticed my concern because he sighed and leaned forward, throwing Mandy a quick glance before whispering, “It’s really nothing to worry about”
I frowned. “Dad, it’s so obvious we are starting to sink again….” I mumbled.
“Summer, it’s reall-”
“I know I know” I sighed, because he will just lie and pretend that everything is fine. I know it wasn’t because if everything is fine why would his face dropped so down, why would our bank accounts still empty and why would the cupcake shop we owned opens early and close late?
Worst of all why would his small gas station be in bankruptcy for how many months now?
We are starting to sink….again…..
After I made sure Mandy was in her bed, waiting for sleep to arrive I sneaked inside Charles’s room. The person I needed to talk to about our parent’s behavior earlier. I knocked silently and waited for him to grant an enter.
I saw him in his study table with his computer on. He looked at me when I entered his room. I pulled a bean bag next to him.
“You aren’t watching graphics that’s got to do with couples doing a honeymoon are you?” I teases.
He rolled his eyes. “Nope, Sum, I was just checking out a college application” he muttered.
I breathed deeply and asked what’s with dad down behavior. Charles faces me fully, his eyes desperate and his lips closing and opening.
