Chapter Thirty Six

Co-workers

Weekend comes and I made sure to wake up early, and when I stepped inside the kitchen to make breakfast I was surprise to see Charles and dad already on the counter munching their own breakfast. I totally didn't expect them to wake up too, and attend whatever errands they had for today.

"Why are you awake so early?" Charles and I asked at the same time.

"I'm going to find work" I said at the same time he said, "I'm going to work."

We stared at each other, frowning in confusion.

"You have work?" I asked before he starts his twenty questions.

"Dad and I actually, the LaKinsley household needed cleaning so dad asked me if I wanted to come with him, and I said yes," he blurted out. "What about you?"

"Well since the shop isn't that busy like it was used to be, I'm going for job hunting. The owner of that sea food store told me one of his customers owned a restaurant in the mall who are looking for full timers in the weekends. The store owner told me to leave my resume and he will instantly give it to his customer. I mean I received a text message last night for an interview as early as nine," I checked the clock and I have an hour to get ready. "Mom says she is fine with it...."

"Well better get your breakfast fix first before anything else," dad announces. I know he wasn't thrilled of me calling someone to help us this time, that's why he was letting us find another job besides helping mom manage the shop.

I made a hot chocolate drink and toasted three breads for my breakfast; Charles puffing at my choice of food. I ignore him anyway, not on the mood putting up with his scorning.

Twenty minutes to nine, I was parked in front of the still close mall. However there is an employee line stuck in front of the guards who were checking their bags for god-knows-what. I made a beeline anyway and wait for my turn.

"Good morning" I greeted the guards once I was in front of them, both guards looked at me in confusion, probably thinking I was early to roam around the mall when it wasn't still open for the public since it was still early in the morning.

"How can we help you miss, malls open at ten thirty," the black guard with a very buff body told me.

"I'm not here to shop, actually I'm here for the Goodfood restaurant; the manager wanted to interview me for the vacant job they have. Here," I offered them my extra resume just for my story to collaborate, which is the truth though.

"Food court at the very left side, there you can find the restaurant," the guard told me, beckoning me to come in now.

"Um thanks" I replied gratefully.

Smiling and waving them goodbye, I trudge to where the food court is. I opened the door of the restaurant, ignoring the close sign on it. "Good morning, I'm Summer Welsh and I'm here to see Mr. Peterson." I instantly blurted out when a girl came around the corner to see who just came in.

"Knock on that door there" she pointed to the door with a manager written on it.

"Thanks" I told the girl before walking to the direction she pointed me and knocked on the door.

"Come in" said a rough voice.

When I opened the door, a balding old man was sitting on a desk with papers in his hands, reading it keenly. He looked up to see who it was. "And you are?" he greeted, his eyebrows rising in expectation.

"Um...hi... I'm Summer Welsh the one-"

I was cut off instantly. "Yes yes I remember you from the phone call. I'm getting straight to the point here. The job will be an all around, and when I say all around, you could be waiter and dishwasher or cashier around here, that depends of course with your soon-to-be buddies in this establishment. You might be waiter today or two hours from now but it will shift to being a dishwasher and that depends of the volume of our customers. You can be cashier too if my permanent cashier is absent, late or taking her break. Now I see in your resume you work in a cupcake shop before, right, and you are all around?" he asked.
