Chapter FortyI give up!
There are too many people clad in white polo, black slacks, and shiny shoes sitting in the bleachers behind the players. Charles was eyeing them nervously as the coach talks with his clipboard in the open designing strategies for this game. The gym was so noisy and full, nerves of anticipation who will going to win ignites the fans. It was our home court advantage but the opposing team brought dozens of people with them. Mom, dad and Mandy were in front of us. Marty, Hanley, Ivan, Erin and I are joining the noise. Sometimes dad will join in our conversation.
My eyes keep straying to our players; the nervous face of my brother kept me worrying. I just hope the presence of sponsors won't make him lose his concentration. This isn't really the time to do that. He desired this and he needed to deliver what they expected. He must steal the show from Trench.
Trench...
Trench whose face was full of concentration. It already told me he will give a damn show no matter what happened.
Damn it!
How come athletic guys are so appealing when they are in their jerseys? Especially this breathing and walking temptation. Girls everywhere have this look that suggests they are undressing someone. The hunger in their eyes said it so, and it is directed to him. I don't know if he notices their eyes, but he didn't give a flying cent to notice them.
"Hey Sum" Marty muttered to my left ear.
"Yes?" My eyes still won't leave the sight of Trench. He was just so attracting unnecessary attention even if he didn't intend too.
"Stop ogling your ex and you might wanna check if there is drool accumulating in your chin, honey," she chuckled while I scowl at her. "You look like you want to eat him now."
"Shut up!" I snap at her.
"He's looking at you" she thrilled.
I crane my neck to check her bluff. She was right though because Trench intense eyes connected with mine. His left cheek lifting slightly, I don't know if it is a smile or a smirk. All I care was it made him more eye-catcher when he did that.
Vibration made me drop our staring contest. My phone lightening up and the message box appeared on the screen. It's from him. U sure u don't want 2 stop me from stealing da show Sum? –T
I stared at it for a while, brewing a reply.
2nd half meet me in da parking lot if u want 2 stop me –T.
"Okay guys the game is about to start. The jump ball is about a second away!" the announcer told the crowds. I kept my phone in my pocket. The anticipation and mostly anxiety creeping my entire attention. Any second now and I'll about to find out my decision to give up and let Trench win this personal game we had been going at since the break up.
Our school wins the toss up, Trench's has the ball and he pass it to Gin who pass it to Hawk then back to Trench who came flying on top of the opponents guard to dunk the ball. The entire gym exploded in cheers. I gaze at Charles who was seated on the bench together with the rest; the coach's eyes gleaming in happiness at the impressive play. Then the inbound was stolen by Trench and he positioned himself behind the three point line before releasing it in the air. The defender in front of him tried to stop the shot; the whistle was blown at the same time the ball went straight in the basket.
"Counted foul! One more shot from Mr. Graysten. Looking good out there young fella. He had already five points and if he makes the free throw which was no sweat as you saw he made it," the enthusiastic person on the mike says. "Six points in just only thirty second! That's very impressive!"
