Chapter 54

Charles arrived in the doorstep seven in the evening just in time for dinner. He looks older with the beard he was supporting right now. College didn't make his life better,  instead it ended his whole career on playing basketball.  After a year in UCLA a nightmarish injury happened to him half way through the collegiate season. He was trying to win the game by shooting a three when an opposing team bump into him so hard Charles was thrown from the court toward a steal chair. He landed on his spinal cord and twisted his hips badly. The doctor says he will never have the chance to play again. We were thankful he still can walk and ran with limitations. The school gave him physical therapy for a year and extended two years more of his scholarship.

"Charles! Unca Charles!" Mandy and Myles chorus when he walks in.

"Hey girls!" he joined their squeals. You might think he was one of them. "How's my little sis and my little adorable niece?"

"Fine," Mandy replied at the same time Myles answered,  "where is my toy? You promise" she continued,  Charles snorted at that.

"One barbie doll and one bag full of Hersey chocolates coming right up." He zip his backpack to reveal what he brought home.

"Yay!!" the two girls scream in happiness.

"What about me?" I asked playfully.  I'm good as long as Myles is having a good time.

"Oh come here and I'll give you a hug sis, you're too grown up for dolls and chocolates" he mused which I return with a punch. "Oi easy there Pacman"

"Kids come on now dinner is ready!" mom announces.

"Myles, don't eat that chocolate. Dinner is ready sweety come on," I beckoned the pouting little girl with her arms full of chocolates and toy. "You'll eat one after dinner okay?" I hitch her legs on my waist and carried her in the dining room.

"Where is dad?" Charles asked while his hands load his huge plate with spaghetti and meatballs. The fella seems to miss food for a week.

"He had a two day job in the mining company where his friend work. They called for his assistance so he went." Mom snatches the bowl away from him when she noticed there isn't enough left for the four of us. "Remember the rest too, Charles" she scolded.

"I haven't had my lunch since I came here for Chris sake, can you blame for slurping all the food?"

"Not our fault," Mandy commented.

"I can take back the chocolates, Mandy," he threatened.

"Aw Myles would be sad, right Myles? Unca Charles said he will take back the chocolates he gave us," oh! Mandy can plah the game now.  Charles recoiled from his seat when Myles's purple eyes stared in his direction with her lips pouting.

"Aw come on munchkins you know unca Charles would never take what Myles own, cross my heart," he swears, crossing his heart seriously. Mandy grinned at him evilly, he returned it with a glare.

"Sucker," Mandy mouthed in victory.

"Wait till you bring a guy here I'mma kick his butt," he hiss.

Mandy stuck her tongue for a response. Myles copied her to which made mom scolded Mandy. "Do not do that in front of child! See now she mimicked you. You Charles stop scorning your sister in that way Myles won't pick up another impolite actions."

"So how is college?" I asked him as soon as we are the only ones left in the living room. Myles is in my room sleeping peacefully with her new doll in her arms.
