According to her digital weather forecast, today's weather is fair: the sky is filled with opaque clouds and precipitation is least expected. Synthia breathed and looked at her rearview mirror, everything felt wistful to her as she took her Mercedes Benz along the busy highway of Makati, Manila, and to a particularly familiar building somewhere down Rizal Street.
Finally for the first time in two years.
She's wearing a Tom Ford Pencil Skirt and a Stella McCartney wool blazer, underneath it was a Taylor sleeveless top which definitely emphasized her porcelain skin. She decided to not wear too much makeup and her overall appearance gave her a bolder mien—this is the rebirth of Atty. Synthia Rey Fortrera. Meanwhile, there was an entirely different perspective scrutinizing her from a few meters away. He took his phone out and tapped on his screen before putting it right next to his right ear. By the way his eyebrows are furrowed, he was infuriated as he was also impatiently waiting for somebody to pick up.
"Shit!" He cursed and looked behind him "I thought it's going to be a lot easier for me to do this pero, pare, I've seen her several times before and she's excellent in criminal cases too!"
(Pare, I thought you knew she excels in everything.)
"Pare, nawala siya ng dalawang taon at kanina lang I saw her at the carpark. Hindi naman na siguro siya ganon kagaling no?" He wanted assurance for himself. It felt like any second his anxiety would devour his soul, seeing her brought a different level of intimidation. His friend nodded on the other line and firmly said (Oo naman, I heard last hawak niya ng criminal case is many years ago pa. Pre, focus lang.)
"Eto na nga. Mahabang session to, tingnan mo."
She is standing in front of the courtroom for the first time again. The names were shown on the electronic device outside. Her eyes roamed around the court and could see the benches filled—everyone's probably gonna wait for her to fail again. She shook her head to shove the thoughts away. That interview from 2 years ago drastically dragged her down but she was persistent. The suspension gave her the time to breathe. Her two years of waiting for the right time was progressive. Synthia had never foreseen herself not serving the public while she was actually doing it and when everything fell apart, she was in a 'paraisong parisukat' where her emotions held her captive.
"Good morning, Ma'am Angeles." the woman took her hand and smiled at her. "Good morning, Attorney." The woman is probably in her mid 50's based on her appearance
Synthia had a warm toothy smile on.
"Amber, baby, are you nervous?"
The child had tears pooling inside her eyes when she looked up. Her pink lips turned pale and her throat had dried up like the desert. The little girl nodded and remained quiet.
"The hearing is in an hour. Shall we go inside?"
"Yes sure, Attorney."
They were about to leave the spot they're standing when someone held them back. The little girl shook her head, not wanting to get any closer to the door.
"Amber..."
She shook her head "I'm scared."
Synthia looked at the woman and smiled before making her way to the little girl.
"Hi, Amber." she smiled and leveled her. Tears still brimmed at the side of the child's beautiful eyes and she was lost in them for a second. The little girl was frightened of the courtroom, she knew very well that a place that big was not for kids and she doesn't understand why she's needed to go inside. Synthia could read her mind, Amber is just like him.
