I shrug. "Kelvin and I have a... complicated, friendship. Here in the village, popularity and strength in firebending is everything. I wasn't a firebender, so I gained my social place through Kelvin. We help each other out; we are allies not friends. Let's just say that are interests do not align when the topic is whether the Avatar is a waste of time or not."

"Oh." Rose replies simply.

We walk for a long time before any of us says anything. "What's the plan?" Rose asks.

"We get you out of the Fire Nation," I reply. "And you learn waterbending. Oh, and you also see a mechanic."

Rose groans. "I'm fine, Mom. We can't afford the time. How do you plan to teach me water bending without water?"

I smile. "We have plenty of water. I know a technique to pull water out of living plants."

"Doesn't that kill them?" Rose replies, shocked.

"Aww, look who's the environmentalist now?" I mock.

"Shut up! I lived in a tree for like a year." Rose replies.

"Whatever." I drawl. "Come on, let's eat. Didn't eat breakfast."

"I didn't either." Rose says. "Let's eat."
