Unexpected

30 weeks

Meredith was now 30 weeks pregnant and Derek wanted to throw a baby shower for his friends and family. Derek hasn't even told his family yet because he didn't want to go against Mer but he needed to tell them. Derek walked down to the living room where Meredith was sitting on the couch watching a movie. "Mer can we talk" he asked. "Of course, what's up?" She replied. "Well I still haven't told my family about this. I need to tell them at some point and now will be a good time. You are 10 weeks away from your due date so please can I or we tell them?" He pleaded. "Well I mean, you can but I don't want to talk to them because your sisters haven't really liked me in the past so I'm good with you telling them" she said. "And, let's have a baby shower. All our friends and my family will come. Please" Derek asked. "Fine, but make sure to invite Richard please he's had a hard time with Adele passing" Mer replied. "Will do" Derek said as he kissed her head. Derek called his family. "Hey mom, well don't yell at me I wasn't keeping this a secret on purpose I was just trying to make sure Meredith was ok." He sighed. "Derek what's wrong? Did someone die?" His mom asked. "No no, mom Meredith is pregnant" Derek said. "What really, Zola will have a sibling. Oh my gosh! How far along?" Carolyn asked. "30 weeks" He said hesitantly. "DEREK CHRISTOPHER  SHEPHERD" she screamed. "I'm so so sorry I didn't tell you. Mer didn't want to tell anyone because she didn't want to take a change of having a miscarriage" he sighed. "Oh Derek. Can I tell your sisters?" She asked. "Yeah and I want you all to come down to Seattle next week for a baby shower." "Okay, we will be there, I love you" she replied. "I love you too mom bye" Derek said as he hung up the phone. Derek then called everyone else at the hospital to invite them.
*1 week later*
It was the day of the baby shower. Some people knew the genders of the babies and that they were having twins but others didn't so Meredith and Derek were putting sonograms in a envelope for everyone to see. They were excited. "How are you feeling" Derek asked as he placed his hands on his wife's stomach. "Good but nervous" Mer replied. That's when the guests started arriving. When all the guests arrived they all talked about baby names and ate food and then opened gifts. After Mer opened her gifts she thanked everyone. "So, what is the gender" Carolyn asked. "Well, we have the sonogram right here. Would you like to do the honors" Meredith said as she handed Carolyn the envelope. "Wha- really" Carolyn said shocked. "Yes Mom it was all Merediths idea" Derek smiled. Carolyn opened the envelope and pulled out the sonogram that read baby A. "ITS A GIRL" Carolyn shouted. Everyone was cheering until Derek spoke up. "That's not it" .  Carolyn looked up and placed her hand back in the envelope. She pulled out another sonogram that read baby B. "What twins" she asked surprises. Derek nodded as his mom read the gender. "ITS A BOY. A BOY AND A GIRL" Carolyn shouted as she went to hug Meredith. "Thank you for having my grandchildren" Carolyn said as she held her. "Your welcome" Mer replied. Two hours passed and all the guests left except Dereks mom and sisters. "Derek, call us when the babies are born we will get on the first flight to meet them" They said. "Okay I will guys. Have a good flight Love you all" he said as he hugged and kissed each person. "Love you tell Meredith I love her too" Carolyn said as she headed out of the house. Derek went upstairs to Meredith and laid next to her. "That was nice" Derek said as he kissed her. "Yeah" Mer sighed. "Hey, what's wrong" He asked. "Nothing I just have a headache and want to sleep while we still can because in 10 weeks we will have 2 screaming children" Meredith said as she stared at the wall. "It's ok, let's just sleep. I love you" Derek said as he stroke her hair. "I love you too" Mer replied as she drifted off to sleep. Derek couldn't sleep he was awake all night thinking about his soon to be big family. One he always wanted. He ended up falling asleep around 2 am and then waking up at 6 am for work. Today was a big day he was starting his Alzheimer's trial.
