Unexpected

Back to work.

*4 weeks after they returned home*
Meredith woke up at 6 am to her alarm beeping. She nudged Derek to wake him up. "Derek you have to get up. We get to go back to work today" Meredith sighed. "Uhh I'm up" Derek replied sleepily. "What's wrong?" Meredith asked. "I just don't want to go back to work. It's been nice being home with you and the kids" Derek replied with a smile on his face. "Well, I like being home too but we have to go to work. I miss the hospital actually" She said. "Ok. I need a shower" Derek said as he got up. "I need a shower too" she smirked as she got up also. After they had their fun in the shower, they went to get the kids up. "Zola get up and get dressed so we can take you to school" Derek said as he walked into her room. Meredith went to get the twins up for their first day of daycare. "Hey Ellis" she said as she picked her up slowly. Mer rocked Ellis back in fourth for a minute before picking out the onesie she was going to wear. After she got the onesie she changed Ellis and got her dressed. Then Derek walked in the room. "Is Bailey up yet?" He asked. "No I was hoping you could get him up while I go make Zola some breakfast" Meredith replied. "Yeah I'll get him up. I'll be down after he's ready" He said. "Thank you" Meredith said as she kissed him then walked out of the room. "Zola breakfast is ready" Meredith yelled from the kitchen. "Coming mom" Zola said as she grabbed her backpack from her room. Meanwhile Derek was getting Bailey ready. "Hey big boy" Derek said as he grabbed Bailey out of his crib. "You look so much like your mommy" he smiled. He took Bailey to the changing table and put him in a blue onesie and took him downstairs. "Hey bails" Mer said in a excited voice. She walked over to him and gave him a kiss before grabbing him and putting him in the high chair to eat. After everyone ate breakfast they finally left to head to Zola's school. "Have a good day zozo we love you" Mer said as Zola got out of the car. "Love you too" Zola replied.  Now Meredith, Derek and the twins were on their way to the hospital. "Hopefully they will like daycare" Derek sighed. "They should be ok, I'm just going to miss them" Meredith said. Derek moved his hand to Meredith thigh and said "we get to see them tonight. They will be fine and we will be fine". They finally got to the hospital. They both got out of the car and each grabbed a kid. Derek took Ellis and Meredith took Bailey. When they walked in the hospital everyone was excited to see the babies again. "Hey Grey welcome back" Richard said when he saw Meredith. "Thanks" she replied. Mer and Derek got in the elevator and made their way to the daycare where they dropped the kids off. After they dropped the kids off they got back in the elevator to get to the attendings lounge. "Are you excited to be back Doctor Shepherd?" Mer asked. "Yes I am how about you doctor Grey?" He replied. "I'm ready also" She sighed as the elevator came to a stop. Meredith and Derek got out and made their way to the lounge to change into some scrubs to begin working. *beep beep beep* Merediths pager chimed. "Well I have to go" she sighed as she ran out of the room to the ER. "What do we have" She asked. "35 yr old female with a deep laceration on her abdomen with a weak pulse" the paramedic said as they wheeled the patient in. Meredith worked and tried to stop the bleeding but it just wouldn't stop. "Charge 250" she said as they shocked the patient. "Charge 350" she sighed. They did and got nothing. "Damn it. Time of death 10:34 am" Meredith said as she walked out of the room angry. What if that was her that didn't survive. Same age, same status that could've been her. "I can't do this right now" Meredith sighed as she went into the on call room. She laid on the bed for a couple of minutes until the door opened. It was Cristina and Owen, halfway in a make out session. "Damn Cristina this room is occupied" Meredith said  loudly. "Oops sorry" Cristina chuckled as her and Owen looked at each other and walked out of the room. Meredith laid staring at the ceiling for about 15 minutes before she got a page from Bailey. She got up and ran out of the on call room to the ER again. "What's up Bailey" She asked. "I need you to asses the stomach injuries while I page Shepherd to look at the head injuries" Bailey said as she read through the chart. Meredith got to work examining the patient and stitching up the small cuts on his stomach. Derek walked in after Meredith got the stitches done. "Hello Doctor Grey" he said as he saw her. "Hello Doctor Shepherd" she replied. "Oh no, whatever you fools are doing stop. It seems nasty" Bailey said as she walked out of the trauma room. Meredith shot Derek a grin. "He doesn't have a bleed or anything just a concussion. Keep him here over night" Derek said as he handed a nurse a chart. "Doctor Grey come with me please" Derek smirked as he walked out of the room. "What's up" She asked. "I need a consult, in the On call room" Derek smirked as he grabbed her hand and walked towards a room.
