Spirit week had arrived at Riverdale High. And for the first time in years, the students actually had something to celebrate. The long suffering Bulldogs, in large part part thanks to breakout star Munroe Moore, were finally going to the state finals, where they would take on the undisputed titans of the gridiron, the Stonewall Stallions.
For principal Honey, who commissioned an article about the game for ace reporter Betty Cooper, the championship was, at last something positive to promote. But for Riverdale's star QB, Archie Andrews, this spirit week was special for a different reason. It would be the last of his career.
Mercy POV
I walk with Toni, Cheryl, Katie and, Eliza down to practice when Mr. Honey and some woman steps in front of us.
Mr. Honey:Cheryl, girls how fortuitous. I'd like for you to meet someone-
Cheryl:No time to chat, Mr. Honey. We're on our way to practice our Spirit week musical routine, which will, naturally, be epic.
Me and Toni stare at the woman who's smiling.
Mr. Honey:On that subject, as was discussed with Mrs. Burble, I have brought in Miss. Appleyard to he your... New coach.
Cheryl:But cheer season is almost done, Mr. Honey.
Ms. Appleyard: I can handle this, Holden.
I smirk and fold my arms Toni into me as she does the same.
Cheryl:Look, I'm not sure what Honey has told you, but we don't need a coach. I run the show around here with Mercy on my side. Howevs, we are looking for a launder woman.
Ms. Appleyard:From now on, we're going to change things up. The Vixens are a cheer squad. So we'll be focusing on cheers, not singing and dancing to pop songs.
Me:Yeah, no that's not your job as coach, you're only job it to over see. You can't make changes if you don't know what changes are to be made.
Ms. Appleyard:And you are?
Me:Mercy Johnson, co-captain.
Ms. Appleyard:Ah, well, now gather the rest of the girls and meet me out on the field, so we can practice some drills, okay?
Me and Cheryl look at each other and blink before looking at her.
Cheryl:I'm sorry, am I hallucinating, or did you just give us an order?
Ms. Crapapple: I led my last team to nationals three years in a row. I think I know what I'm doing here.
Me:Hm, wanna cookie? We don't care, it's funny you're here now and not with your three time national attending squad, we do stuff differently here.
Ms. Crapapple:Do you wanna run laps, Mercy Johnson?
Before I can speak Toni pulls me back.
Toni:No ma'am, come on.
Toni pulls me and around the corner and pushes me into the blue and gold were Betty and the stars of the football team are situated. I sit in the chair near by and Toni points to me then Betty.
Toni:Let her out of here in ten minutes.
Me:That ain't -
Toni:The last thing we need is you and Cheryl feeding off each others rebellious attitudes making the team act out. See you in ten.
