On the way to our apartment we stop by the grocery store to grab a bunch of christmasy food, (because what would Christmas be without christmasy food) and head back on our way.
Once we're home, we give my dad and Wren 'Le Grande Toure' of the apartment. When we get to the door at the end of the hallway, they get curious.
"This room is off limits." I draw a huge X with my arms.
"What, is this where you keep your dead bodies?" Wren cracks herself up. The funniest part is that she already knows it's the baby's room, she's just 'playing along.'
"Yeah, what's in there?" Dad asks.
"Nothing," I reply sternly, signaling that this conversation is over.
"Okay, okay, jeez." When our father passes in front of us, she gives me a gigantic wink. It makes her look like she's having a seizure, because she moves the entire right side of her face.
I fake smile at her and make an ugly face.
"Dinner is ready!" Levi yells from downstairs.
"Coming, sweetie!" I say playfully.
Wren and Arthur both look at me with strange faces.
"Since when did you guys get in with the mushy stuff and start name calling?" Wren asks, again, already knowing the answer.
"I don't know. We're getting pretty serious." I smile, trying to signal our engagement to our Dad, but he doesn't pick up on it.
I got dressed and put my makeup on while Levi was finishing up dinner, so it's all done. I'm wearing my hair up in a side bun, with a braids similar to milkmaid on both sides of my head. Curls spiral down my face and tickle my cheeks, and they slightly bounce as I walk.
I'm wearing a long light purple dress with gems at the top, and the soft material brushes on my legs as I make my way down the stairs. I have lip gloss on, and my makeup is silvery smokey-eye.
As I make my way down the stairs and towards the table, Levi gets out of his chair and pulls mine out.
"You look stunningly beautiful." He says in awe.
"Thank you, sweetheart." I say, brushing my hand against his cheek.
It's not weird when we call each other cute names. It's comfortable, unlike some 40 year old couples who just sound plain old and drained of all fun when they say it.
"So, shall we eat?"
We say grace, and start the meal. We talk about things like college, Levi's job, dad's job, Wren's barely-a-job-job, (she works at the fro-yo down the street from college) and other things that I can't help but tune out. Generally I would listen, but all I can think about right now is telling my father our exciting news.
"So, Dad." I begin.
"Yes Cather?" He smiles, and I haven't seen him smile in a while. I reminisce
back to when he used to smile all the time, and not get so caught up in his work."We have some big news."
I reach for Levi's hand under the table, but he finds mine first.
"Go on," he says, his hand moving in an expectant circle.
"We're...engaged!"
