Silence fills the room, and a pit of despair begins to form in my stomach.
the silence is so intense, the birds on our kitchen windowsill stop chirping.
Or maybe it's just me, and i'm overly-paranoid.
Just when I think my dad is going to scream, a grin spreads on his face from ear-to-ear. "Aw man guys. That's-that's just fantastic!" He comes over to my side of the table, and I rise from my chair to reciprocate the hug. He reaches his hand out to Levi, and he gladly accepts it.
"Thank you sir. Your daughter is an amazing woman." Levi seems a bit nervous, but he plays it off ok. I obviously blush at Levi's comment, but don't make an effort to hide it. I'm human, and humans blush.
"I'm so happy for you both. I'm glad you guys have the strong bond that me and your mother once had." He says.
"Thanks dad."
We sit back down and continue eating. The turkey is fantastic. My mouth waters, and I pat it with a napkin to prevent myself from looking like a total idiot. Besides, I don't want to stain my pretty dress."So, Cath, when is the wedding?" My dad asks.
"Oh, I don't know. We talked about it, and we think we want a pretty, small wedding. You know, since we don't have too many relatives." I explain before scooping myself some parmesan green beans.
"That sounds like a great idea," he says, "where were you thinking of having it?"
"Having what?" I ask awkwardly, food half-stuffed in my mouth.
"The wedding."
"Oh," I swallow, "Well, we were thinking about inviting all of our guests down to Marco Island or Destin Florida. We want to have the reception on the beach." I tell him. I can just picture it now. The sun shining bright, the waves bringing in tiny drafts of wind, but not enough to blow my dress around much. A beautiful wedding, with all of the people I love.
Sounds good to me.
'That sounds like a very nice wedding," My father says, nodding his head.
"Yep." Me and Levi say, looking at each other.
We finish our dinner, and I tell my dad I have a surprise for him. Levi gets Wren some ice cream, and I lead my dad upstairs.
"You know that room that I told you was off limits before?" I ask him.
"Yeah. What's in it?" He smiles.
"Well, why don't you take a look?" I tell him.
He opens the door and we both go in.
He looks around very slowly. Not angry nor happy, just puzzled.
He slides his hand over the crib, and then sits down in the cushioned rocking chair.
"I remember when you were a baby." He begins. "You were so mellow. You would hardly ever scream or yell. You'd just sit there until you felt hungry or tired, and then you'd tug on my shirt. It was like our little language." He continues. "But I remember the only thing you'd ever scream about was reading. You would cry if we didn't read to you before bed. I don't know how you knew, because you were only one, but if we didn't read to you, you'd throw a fit." He laughs.
"Wow. I didn't even know that." I say.
"I'm so proud of you Cath. You've really grown up to be a beautiful, smart, sophisticated woman."
"Thanks, Dad." I tell him. He gets up and gives me a nice hug.
"I'm gunna be a grandpa." He says. "Does this mean I have to retire?"
I laugh.
Oh, dad. Always so buried in his work.
