Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
Cath's hearing started to come into focus as she slowly woke up.
Her eyes fluttered open, and she looked to the left. Sitting not in the chair, but neeling on the floor, was Levi. He was holding her hand, and for the first time ever, she saw a tear roll down his cheek. He was looking down at the floor, and she assumed that he didn't know she was awake. She wondered for a moment if he thought that she was dead, or that she would soon be dead.
Although she was in a hospital bed, she didn't really know why. The intense pain threw off her train of thought. She felt as though little sparks of lighting were coursing throughout her body, like little prickling needles that prodded at her skin at every movement. She remembered being in the car with Wren, and then something had happened... Regardless of what had happened, Levi looked the most terrified and depressed she had ever seen him. And it killed her to watch him in that much pain.
She squeezed his hand with all the strength left in her.
Levi looked up, and he looked as if relief had washed over him.
However, his worried expression did not fade.
Cath had just became aware that the two of them were not the only people in the room.
She looked just above Levi's head to find that she had a double room, not a private room.
Her heart stopped.
Her eyes grew wide.
She started taking in deep, staggering breaths, afraid of what terrifying things she might see if she were to look at the bed to her right.
She struggled to speak; her mouth groggy and dry from the IV. "Levi...."
He looked up once more, and let out an expression - the kind of expression you get when you remember a really happy memory, but then realize something tragic, and the memory is swept away.
He let out a laugh followed by a deep sob. Her heart ached and throbbed and was punching into her chest, as if it wanted to escape because it couldn't take the pain any longer.
"Yes, Cather?" He sniffled; wasn't holding back the tears, and she was glad about that. Holding in feelings just makes them ten times worse. Cath would know.
A tear rolled down her cheek, and Levi caught it with his thumb, tracing it in circles on her cheekbone. And then, it all came out. She began sobbing, unable to hold back the tears from the faint memory of the accident.
"..The person next to me...is it...?" She said with a raspy voice.
He looked away, as if he would be pained by the next sentence if he let the words escape his lips.
She sobbed.
And sobbed.
And sobbed.
She finally willed herself to look to her right, where the other person lie.
Cuts and bruises covered her face, neck, and arms. Her chest rose and fell in uneven intervals, as if she were struggling to breathe. Then, for just a moment, she started breathing like a dog, fast and restricted, but quickly returned to her staggery, slow breaths.
In the bed next to her lie the girl she grew up with; the girl she shared memories with; the girl she played Hide-And-Seek with.
The girl in the bed next to her was Wren.
Cath looked away and closed her eyes. Before she could protest, Levi climbed into bed with her, but with such caution that it almost took him 5 minutes to situate himself. He gently put his arm under her neck, supporting her head so that she was laying in the crease of his arm and his torso. It didn't hurt, at all, actually. Wren had gotten the worst of it. Cath felt Levi's warmth spread from his body to hers, and she let herself drift back to sleep.
"...Don't worry...Everything....Okay.....love you." Levi's words drifted, but she still heard what he said.
Before she could reply, she fell asleep in his arms.
