~Flashback Chapter~

There was something weirdly unspoken between Y/N and Shouta. Shouta didn't want to say anything and Y/N knew what it was about, but she didn't want to bring it up either, because the topic was just... it was getting old and she didn't like talking about it and it was just... she didn't really know where she stood on it herself. And so they were just lounging on Shouta's couch, neither of them saying a word.

Normally, Y/N really enjoyed those evenings when Shouta and her would just chill at his place (or her place) and they'd just lie around, saying nothing, doing nothing, just... just being present in the same room with each other. It felt like she could be alone with her thoughts, but she still had the added safety of having Shouta around, in case things got bad. It was never an uncomfortable silence.

Today it was. And it was only uncomfortable, because there was something that needed to be said, but neither of them really wanted to approach the topic. So they were keeping it quiet until the day would come, when one of them couldn't keep it in anymore and would come out with it. And Y/N was dreading that day, because she knew it would lead to a bad argument.

"So... how are things with the... the investigation?" Shouta wanted to know. Y/N gulped. Was that already it? Shouta wouldn't just ask about the investigation because he was interested... he'd ask because he was leading up to something. And that something had to be Satoshi. Satoshi Takamoto was the elephant in the room. Shouta hadn't liked it when Y/N had given that press conference defending him and he had made his concerns very clear to her.

But Y/N wasn't the kind of person to listen to things like that and Shouta and her both knew that. She didn't know why he had been surprised by that. He really should have known, after all they had been friends for years. And usually Y/N was the one that got both of them into trouble (and out of trouble). The problem now was that her luck in getting herself out of trouble was probably going to run out, if Shouta was right with his suspicions. She could only hope that he wasn't.

"They're... well, I don't know. I don't wanna say good, because... I mean, we still haven't found the killer, but... you know. As good as they can get, I suppose." she replied. Actually, things weren't good at all. They had been going at that whole thing for nearly a year and they had absolutely no leads. And there was no evidence... well, except for the stuff that... Y/N didn't like thinking about it. Because the longer all this went on, the guiltier she felt about it. But she also couldn't leave Satoshi hanging.

"Huh. Any new leads?" Shouta asked her. Y/N was already getting upset. There was only one reason he was asking this, because he knew that there were no new leads. And because he knew what she was doing. And he didn't agree with it, understandably. But he didn't need to be a dick about it.
