Cruel

In the grand hall later that day as dinner is being served, I notice that Princess Dahlia's four servants have taken to whispering amongst themselves whilst glancing over at me on occasion.

Ruth: "Ignore them, Anya".

Sara: "They think themselves above all others simply because they are of Svartalfheim".

Me: "Why would they believe such a thing?"

Ruth: "The royal family and their servants have a formidable reputation for being quite cruel".

Sara: "To their own people, but especially to anyone from another realm. There are even rumours of them having people murdered for crossing them in the past".

We stand back as the King, Queen Mother and Princess Dahlia sit enjoying their meal with the King and Princess deep in conversation. They seem to be enjoying themselves.

Perhaps this is to be the woman he will one day marry? She comes across as very prim and proper, a real princess with clearly enough intellect to keep his interest.

Loki: "Anya, could you come here for a moment?" he calls me over to them from across the room.

Me: "Yes, my King?"

Loki: "Princess Dahlia was wondering if you would kindly show her servants to their quarters for the evening?"

Me: "Of course, my King".

The four women follow me in relative silence as I lead them to their chambers. I soon become aware that they are whispering among themselves yet again, making sure that I cannot hear them.

Servant: "Is it true what they say about you? Your father gave you away because you are a half breed runt?" one of them asks suddenly.

Me: "It is" I reply honestly.

Servant 2: "I heard that Surt banished you because you are baron" she says.

Me: "That is not accurate, miss".

I know they are trying to get under my skin in an attempting to antagonise me, but I will not allow it.

Servant 3: "Perhaps a blind Asgardian will be kind enough to bed you one day?" she mocks.

Servant 4: "He would have to be entirely blind to lay with that thing".

They all laugh at my expense, but I do not react to their increasingly cruel comments. Compared to the daily barrage of insults I had suffered on Jotunheim, their's were relatively tame.

We finally reach their quarters and I show them inside, quickly leaving them before they take the opportunity to mock me any further.

Upon arriving back at the grand hall, Ruth and Sara notice that my expression is now less than happy.

Ruth: "What did they do?"

Me: "Nothing at all".

Sara: "But they said something?"

Me: "According to them I am a banished, baron, half breed runt that only a blind Asgardian would be kind enough to bed".

Ruth: "Those horrible girls!"

Sara: "Calm yourself Ruth. Do not worry, Anya. We have ways of repaying them for those hurtful words".

Me: "Such as?"

Ruth: "We will put a little something extra in their breakfast tomorrow".

Sara: "They cannot accompany their princess around the kingdom with the King tomorrow if they are unable to leave the bathroom".

Me: "I would never ask you to commit such a wicked act on my behalf".

Ruth: "You have no need to ask, we are more than happy to do it".
