"I thought...I had? That's what caused this whole mess. She doesn't feel the same way about me."
"If there's one thing, I learned during 50 years of marriage, I learned that sometimes words aren't enough. Sometimes you got to show them how you feel. So why you still sitting there for? Go get your girl."
"I can't. She doesn't want to see me again. Besides she could be on tour now or doing some show somewhere. I don't know for sure where she is."
"Well then, find out! Start talking to her."
(I grab my cellphone and start dialing. I stop and hit cancel before finishing.)
"Something wrong, boy?"
"I... don't know what to say to her."
"Sometimes, you can't think of what to say. You got to let your heart talk for you."
(I try again and again. I keep hitting cancel. I couldn't think of a damn thing to say.)
"Damn it."
"It's not as hard as you think it is. What would you say, if she were with you now? Open your heart."
(I take a deep breath, thinking of Billie. Her beautiful blue eyes, her kisses. How great she felt in my arms. I smile and begin dialing.)
============ In Los Angeles, California ============
(Billie lays in bed, breathing hard. Another panic attack, why had they come back? She knew why, because David wasn't there to hold her. 'Grow up, Billie. You can't depend on a guy, to always be there when you need them.' she thinks. Her cellphone rings, and she practically jumps out of her skin. Her eyes widen, as she looks at her phone. 'No. No. No. Don't answer it, don't answer it!' she tells herself. She answers it.)
"Hello?"
"Billie? Hi, it's David. Sorry if I woke you or anything."
"Call to see who was grabbing my ass now?"
"No. I called to say I was sorry. I treated you like I owned you or something, and I don't. I'm sorry, it won't happen again."
"Well, I'll be damned. A guy that actually has the balls to apologize. Congratulations."
(David stares at his phone in surprise. To him, Billie was coming off like a cold-hearted bitch.)
"Well, that's all I called for. Take care of yourself, Billie."
(The calls ends.)
"David...wait. I'm sorry, I shouldn't have..."
(Too late. Billie tosses her cellphone onto her bed, and curls up with her puppy, and cries herself to sleep.)
============ Back in Philadelphia. ============
"So, what did she say?"
"Not much. She thought I was calling to start another argument with her. I apologized. All I could do I guess."
"Hmm...this problem might be tougher than I thought. Tell you what, go grab that old guitar of yours and play me a tune while I think about it some more."
"That old guitar? You know I haven't touched that guitar in years. I'd be rusty as hell."
"And you need something to think about, besides that girl. Go get it, play me a tune. While I think on your problem."
(I climb in the window, and soon return with an old acoustic guitar. I tune it up, the best I can remember how.)
"Any song in particular?"
"How about that one my wife and I liked, about the stairway?"
