"Billie. What I'm about to tell you stays between us. Understood?"
"Yes."
"David... is Alex and Eddie's youngest brother."
"Wait...he's a Van Halen?"
"Yes...but he prefers to use his adopted name...McAdams."
"But why?"
"David and their oldest sister were put up for adoption, in exchange for money for the Van Halen family to come to America many years ago. David's held a bit of resentment about that. Him and his older sister felt abandoned. He was only 10 years old when this happened. Years later, David and Eddie had a big argument about that, and over Eddie's smoking...and me."
"You?"
"As things started falling apart between Eddie and me, before our divorce. I called David a lot about our problems. He took the time to listen...and I ended up developing feelings for him. He never felt the same way, so we've remained friends."
"So, what happens with him now? I mean as far as a musical career goes?"
"It doesn't. I used to hound him about it for years. Like I said, he never thought he was good enough."
"But...the concert last night?"
"He did that out of respect for Eddie, and for me and my son. Just like he'll probably help you with your show. He'll do it for others, but not for himself."
"But he has all of that talent. Why let it go to waste?"
"True...but what record company would want to sign a twenty-seven-year-old, unknown guitarist to a record deal?"
"Mine."
"Billie...I understand your intentions, but you better ask David how he feels about it first."
(Billie and Valerie talk for a while longer, then Billie walks downstairs into the famous 5150 studio that Eddie had built. She finds David sitting at a red and white piano, staring at the keys.)
"Hi...something wrong?"
"Trying to remember a song. I see you survived the interrogation."
"Your friend is just concerned about you, that's all."
"Uh-huh...let me guess. We're a bad influence on one another...blah...blah...blah. She's too young for you...blah...blah...blah?"
"That...and she's concerned about me getting a baby bump."
"A baby bump? Wait...you're not..."
(Laughs)"No... I'm not. I'm on birth control. She's just concerned about you."
"That's where it gets messed up...right?"
"What do you mean?"
"It shouldn't be concerned about me. It should be concerned about us."
"Well...maybe your friend is worried that my bad guy attitude might influence you to do something you normally wouldn't do."
"Like rescue a beautiful woman from jumping?"
(Smiles)"Or maybe signing with my record label?"
"Wait...who sign?"
"You...silly."
"Okay...why?"
"Because you're talented."
"I'm also old and unknown, Billie. Besides your record company doesn't exactly want us together...remember? They made you choose between your career or me?"
"That was before I knew about your talent. We let them hear you play...and..."
"Let's do this show of yours first. Then see what happens from there. Okay?"
"Alright. What song were you trying to remember?"
"Alone by Heart."
"Never heard of them."
"Okay. The song goes a bit like this...I think."
"That's a pretty song too...but we're supposed to be doing the other one."
"I know. Just running some songs thru my head is all."
(We practice the song together. Billie leaves about an hour later. We agree to meet tomorrow at her parents' house. I go to talk to Valerie in her living room.)
