He stepped inside like my hallway was part of his estate, like the air in our apartment belonged to him first, and the rest of us were just borrowing it. He moved slowly and controlled, shoulder brushing past me on purpose, close enough that I caught that clean, expensive scent. Not cologne. Something colder. Leather and smoke and the faintest hint of the outdoors, like he'd dragged the wilderness in on his boots.

My stomach flipped.

"Y/N?" May called from the kitchen, already in host-mode, already in the version of herself that believed people came to doors for normal reasons. "Who is it, sweetheart?"

My throat tried to close up like it was taking a vow of silence.

I forced air into my lungs. "It's... It's a teacher."

The lie tasted like pennies.

Kraven's eyes flicked to mine, amused. A cat watches a mouse build a tiny, doomed sandcastle.

I swallowed. "Mr Kravinoff. From school."

May appeared like a warm lamp in the doorway, holding a teapot and two mugs like she was carrying peace itself. She didn't see the way my shoulders were tensed. She didn't see how my hand was clenched at my side, nails digging into my palm.

Her smile lit up anyway. "Oh! A home visit! Well, that's... that's unexpected. Teachers never have time for that anymore." She looked between us, gentle concern folding into her expression. "Y/N, you're not in trouble, are you?"

Kraven took the tea as he belonged at our table.

He sat down with a casual elegance that didn't fit our scuffed chairs and mismatched coasters. He held the mug in one hand, the steam curling around his fingers, and smiled at May as if he were an old family friend.

"Nothing to worry about," he said smoothly. "Y/N is working toward becoming my best pupil yet."

May brightened, the way she always did when someone implied I was doing well. She set my mug down in front of me.

"Tea, honey."

"I'm good," I muttered, not trusting my hands to do anything except shake.

Kraven's gaze slid to my untouched mug, then back to me, like he was counting my heartbeats.

May sat across from him, posture polite but curious. "So what's the purpose of your visit, Mr Kravinoff?"

Kraven took a slow sip. "I felt it was time we met. To discuss the duties Y/N has committed to."

My blood went cold.

May tilted her head. "Duties?"

"Extra-curricular," Kraven said, as if he were talking about the chess club. "Something Y/N took on himself."

May nodded, like that made perfect sense. "Oh! Extra classes. That's wonderful. He's been... well." Her smile wobbled for half a second, the worry leaking through. "I've been worried about him lately. I get calls about lateness and missed deadlines. I'm trying, truly, but between my shifts and volunteering at the shelter..." She spread her hands, helpless. "Sometimes it feels like I blink and the day's gone."

Kraven's smile stayed in place, but it didn't reach his eyes.

"There's nothing to worry about," he said. "For now. He is doing the right thing."

For now.

The words sank their hooks into my ribs.

May relaxed a fraction, and I hated how easy it was for someone like him to sound reassuring. To sound like an adult. Like authority.
