The alley turned into a three person argument where everyone brought knives and nobody brought emotional maturity.
I moved on instinct, because if I tried to think, I'd hesitate, and hesitation in a fight like this is basically signing your own obituary.
Ida hit first.
Engines screamed, boots sparking, and he drove a kick straight at Stain's centre mass like he was trying to launch him into tomorrow. Stain flowed sideways, not even startled, and his blade flicked out in a neat little arc aimed for Ida's throat.
My Spider Sense snapped like a rubber band.
I threw myself between them and caught Stain's wrist with both hands. Cold steel brushed close enough that I felt the air split. I twisted his arm down and away, forcing his knife to kiss brick instead of flesh.
"Ida!" I barked. "Back off!"
"Don't tell me what to do!" he snapped, voice tight. His eyes were locked on Stain like the world had narrowed to one target. "He ruined everything!"
Stain tried to pull free. I leaned my weight into the lock, gritting my teeth as my leg protested. A pulse of pain ran up to my hip, sharp enough to make my vision ripple.
Then Stain did what Stain does.
He used the moment I was focused on stopping his blade to attack with the other.
A second knife whistled towards my ribs.
I ducked and felt it skim past, close enough to tug at my hoodie strings. I let go of his wrist and sprang back, because if I stayed in grappling range with him, I was going to end up as a cautionary tale.
Ida surged again.
I pivoted, desperate to keep them from colliding, and fired a web line to hook his shoulder and yank him off his line.
He burned the engines harder and tore through the pull, stumbling but not stopping. He was too angry to be sensible. Too hurt to be safe.
This was what scared me.
Not Stain's knives. Not his speech about "true heroes".
It was the way Ida didn't care if he got hurt, as long as Stain did.
"Ida!" I shouted again, louder. "Listen to me!"
He didn't.
Fine.
If words didn't work, physics would.
I grabbed two rubbish bins with webs, yanked them off the side of the alley like I was pulling curtains closed, and swung them round in a clattering arc.
"Sorry!" I called, mostly out of habit.
The bins slammed into Ida's path and knocked him sideways. He hit the ground hard, skidding, metal scraping, sparks spitting from his boots. It wasn't enough to injure him, but it bought me the one thing I needed.
Seconds.
Stain didn't waste them.
He came at me, blades up, movement efficient and ugly. No wasted energy. No flashy. Just lethal.
I ducked under one slash, rolled across the alley floor, came up in a crouch, and kicked off the wall to get height. My Spider Sense tugged me left, then right, then down, like a puppeteer yanking strings.
Stain's knife clipped brick where my throat had been.
I fired a web at his hand. He cut it. I fired again, lower, aiming for his ankle.
