Eddie crawled out of the wreckage on both hands.
Every breath came with a cough.
Smoke filled his lungs. Heat pressed against his back. The helicopter behind him was a broken pile of metal and fire, its rotors twisted into the ground like snapped bones.
The suit had protected them.
Mostly.
Eddie dragged himself another metre away before his arms gave out.
He dropped to one knee, coughing hard.
The flames hissed in his ears.
The back of his neck itched.
Then, through the smoke, someone stepped toward him.
Red and blue.
White eyes.
Spider-Man.
Eddie froze.
For one strange second, he could not breathe.
The figure stood at the edge of the firelight, hand held out.
"Need a hand?" Spider-Man asked.
Eddie stared at him.
"You're..."
Spider-Man tilted his head.
The suit shifted beneath Eddie's skin.
Something about the stance was wrong.
Still, Eddie reached up.
Spider-Man grabbed his hand and pulled him to his feet.
Then the red-and-blue suit rippled.
The colours bled together.
The web pattern peeled away.
A red-and-black mask grinned back at him.
"On your feet, soldier!" Deadpool shouted. "This is the part where the hero gets up dramatically, looks at the fire, and says something incredibly marketable."
Eddie blinked at him before looking around.
The crash site was chaos.
Ghost Rider walked through the fire like it was morning fog, carrying Stephanie beneath one arm. She was awake, coughing into her sleeve, clutching her backpack with the other hand.
"Put me down," Stephanie muttered.
"You have a concussion," Ghost Rider said.
"I have dignity."
Ghost Rider looked down at her.
"No, you have a unicorn backpack."
Stephanie folded her arms.
"I hate everyone here."
On the other side of the wreckage, Cyclops cut through the helicopter's crushed side with a controlled burst from his visor. The red beam sliced through burning metal, opening an escape route before he climbed out after the pilot.
"Anyone else inside?" Eddie called.
Cyclops shook his head.
"Pilot's alive. Barely. He'll need extraction."
Eddie looked toward Fury's channel on the damaged communicator attached to his belt.
Nothing.
The signal had been fried in the crash.
