The shawarma was warm in my hands, greasy in the way that makes your fingers shine like you've been polishing coins. I sat outside with my legs kicked up on the little metal table like I owned the sidewalk, chewing slow, watching the city move around me.
Morning traffic rolled by in lazy waves. A couple argued softly near a crosswalk. A kid chased a pigeon like it owed him money. Somewhere down the street, a siren wailed, but it felt far away. Like it belonged to someone else's life.
For the first time in what felt like forever... everything was quiet.
Not "nothing bad ever happens" quiet.
More like "the world is holding its breath" quiet.
I took another bite and let myself enjoy the silence anyway.
Then the quiet snapped.
Engines. Multiple. Clean, official. Tires kissing the curb in a neat little line like they practiced.
I didn't even turn my head at first. I just stared at the edge of my wrap and thought, If this is about the bench, I swear...
A car door shut.
Another.
And then I heard it.
A sound that didn't belong in my calm morning at all.
A sob.
I finally looked up.
Police. Two cars. A few uniforms. One of them talking into a radio like this was routine.
And then, behind them, moving too fast like she didn't care who saw her running...
Aunt May.
Her eyes were red already. Tears streaked down her cheeks like she'd been crying for days and her face just forgot how to stop. She spotted me and her whole body folded forward, like her spine turned to paper.
"Y/N!"
I stood up so quickly the chair scraped, and she hit me like a storm.
Her arms locked around me so tight I actually felt it in my ribs. Her hands trembled against my back. She pressed her face into my shoulder and cried like she was trying to put me back together with sound alone.
I didn't know what to do with my hands.
So I just held her.
I let her shake.
I let her breathe me in like she was checking if I was real.
"There you are," she choked out. "There you are, there you are, there you are..."
"I'm here," I said, and my voice came out calmer than it should have. "I'm right here."
She pulled back just enough to look at me, still gripping my hoodie like if she let go I'd vanish again.
Her eyes scanned my face. The cut on my lip. The bruising that hadn't fully decided what color it wanted to be. The way I probably looked... wrong.
"Are you alright?" she demanded, voice cracking halfway through the sentence. "What did they do to you? Are you hurt? Are you—"
"I'm fine." I shrugged like it was nothing. Like I'd just missed a bus. "Just fine."
May's expression didn't believe a single syllable.
"Don't you dare 'just fine' me," she whispered, shaking her head, tears still falling. "You've been gone. I didn't know if you— if I—"
She couldn't finish.
