Issue 71 - I'm Poor

I stood outside the dorms with a duffle bag cutting into my shoulder like it had personal beef with me.

New Heights Alliance Dormitory.

I stared up at it, blinking a few times like the building might suddenly admit it was a cardboard prop.

"How did they even build this so fast?" I muttered. "Did Nezu summon it like a Minecraft admin?"

The doors opened with that glossy, brand-new everything's-clean smell. Inside, Class 1A already looked like they'd been living here for a week. People were moving around like it was a little village. Someone was setting plates. Someone was laughing. Someone was arguing over something that sounded incredibly important and was probably about snack distribution.

Aoyama was the first to spot me, of course. He turned like a spotlight found its target.

"Ahh! Mon dieu! The final star arrives!" he announced, hand to chest like he was about to faint dramatically onto a fainting couch that definitely didn't exist.

A few heads snapped toward me.

Jiro, Uraraka, Kaminari, and Sato moved in like a welcome committee that had been rehearsing but also somehow hadn't rehearsed at all.

"You made it!" Kaminari grinned.

"You... uh... you're the last one," Uraraka said, smiling a little too brightly.

I looked around. "Everyone settled in alright?"

From somewhere near the kitchen, Koda's quiet voice floated out. "We're... baking a cake."

I blinked. "A cake? What's the occasion?"

Jiro stared at me like I'd just asked what day of the week it was while standing under a calendar.

"...Seriously?" she said, arms folding. "You're here. That's the occasion. We've got everyone in the dorms now."

That hit way warmer than I was prepared for. My chest did that stupid thing where it tightens but in a nice way, like it's trying to stop you from smiling too hard.

"...That's actually really nice," I admitted, and my voice came out softer than I meant it to.

I lifted the duffle bag. "I'm gonna drop this in my room, then I'm demolishing that cake."

That's when Ashido stepped out, hands suspiciously behind her back. Black paint smudged her fingers, which she very obviously tried to hide by... crossing her arms. Like paint obeys manners.

"Does anyone know where the last bucket of paint is?" she called out, then her eyes landed on me and her whole body froze mid-sentence.

"Y/N!" she yelped. "When... when did you— I thought you wouldn't be here for a few hours!"

I shrugged. "Aunt May had to take a shift at the hospital early. Figured there's no point waiting around."

Ashido made finger guns at me with maximum casual and minimum success. "Coolcoolcool. Yeah. Great. Awesome. You should try the cake. Sato made a sponge cake."

"Love to," I said, and started toward the stairs again. "Just dropping my bag off first."

"NO!" Ashido blurted.

The room went quiet in that way that makes you suddenly aware of your own breathing.

Ashido's eyes widened like she realized she'd just yelled "NO" at a normal sentence.

"I mean," she tried again, voice squeaking into a calmer register, "your room isn't ready!"

I stopped. "Isn't ready? Why wouldn't it be? Everyone else's is."
