"Mina?"
My voice came out wrong.
Small.
Thin.
Like I was eight years old again, standing somewhere I did not understand, waiting for an adult to explain why the world had suddenly changed shape.
"Mina, hey."
She did not answer.
I was on the floor with her in my arms. I did not remember dropping down. I did not remember catching her. One second she had been standing in front of me, hurt but smiling, alive enough to argue with me.
Now she was limp against my chest.
Too limp.
The knife lay beside us.
I could not look at it.
I could not stop looking at it.
"No."
My hands pressed against her stomach, against the wound, against the blood. There was so much of it. It covered my fingers. It soaked into the torn fabric of her costume. It ran over my wrists and disappeared beneath the black suit like the suit wanted to hide it from me.
Like it could.
"No, no, no, no."
I pressed harder.
"Mina, stay with me. Stay with me, okay?"
Nothing.
Her head rested against my arm, turned slightly toward my shoulder. Her hair was messed up from the fight. There was dust on her cheek. A smear of blood near the corner of her mouth.
She looked like she had fallen asleep after one of those long days at U.A., when she would complain about training and pretend she was not exhausted.
She looked like she might wake up any second and call me dramatic.
I laughed once.
It broke immediately.
"Come on," I whispered. "This isn't funny, Pinky."
My hands shook harder.
"Stop playing around."
The words came out louder.
"Stop it."
I pushed against the wound, desperate enough to believe pressure could fix anything. That my hands could hold her together. That the suit could do something. That the powers inside me, all the hosts and stolen gifts and impossible strength, could make this one thing not real.
"Suit," I gasped. "Do something."
The black around my wrists crawled forward.
It touched her blood.
Then stopped.
It did not know how.
Neither did I.
"Mina, please."
My throat closed around the next word.
"Please wake up."
The corridor blurred behind tears. Red emergency lights flashed over her face. Over my hands. Over the blood between us.
I had spent so long thinking I needed to be stronger.
Faster.
Smarter.
More dangerous.
I had thought that if I could just keep moving, keep fighting, keep getting back up, then I could save everyone.
