The first time Mina Ashido met Y/N Parker, he looked like he wanted to disappear.
He stood at the front of the classroom beside their teacher, small shoulders tucked inward, hands gripping the straps of his backpack so tightly his knuckles had gone pale. His hair was messy. His eyes were lowered. Every time someone shifted in their seat or whispered, he flinched like the sound had touched him.
"Everyone," the teacher said gently, one hand resting near his shoulder without quite touching him, "we have a new student joining us today."
The class straightened with interest.
New students were exciting.
New students meant new questions, new stories, new games at lunch. Usually, they smiled awkwardly and said their name too fast. Sometimes they had a cool quirk. Sometimes they had snacks from another country.
This boy did not look excited at all.
"This is Y/N Parker," the teacher continued. "He's recently moved here, so I want everyone to make him feel welcome."
Mina sat near the middle of the room, pencil in hand, watching him.
Y/N Parker.
The name rang strangely at the back of her mind.
Parker.
Her fingers tightened around her pencil.
The teacher gave him an encouraging smile. "Would you like to say hello?"
Y/N's mouth opened slightly.
Nothing came out.
A few students exchanged glances.
The teacher waited a moment, then softened her voice. "That's alright. Why don't you take your seat?"
She pointed to the empty desk in front of Mina.
Y/N nodded once and walked down the aisle with his head low. His footsteps were quiet. Too quiet. He sat in front of Mina, placed his bag beside his chair, and began taking out his books with careful, slow movements.
Mina watched the back of his head.
Y/N Parker.
She whispered it under her breath, testing the name without meaning to.
"Y/N Parker..."
It rolled off her tongue quietly, like something she was supposed to recognize.
Class began.
The teacher wrote on the board. Pages turned. Pencils scratched. Mina tried to pay attention, but her eyes kept drifting to the boy in front of her.
He barely wrote anything.
His pencil hovered over the page for long stretches, then moved only a little. His shoulders stayed hunched. When the teacher asked the class a question, he lowered his head even more, as if hoping the desk would swallow him whole.
Mina had seen shy kids before.
This felt different.
This felt like someone trying not to break in public.
When class ended, everyone rushed into the usual noise of chairs scraping and friends calling across the room. Mina packed slowly, still watching Y/N as he slid his books into his bag.
A few students lingered near him.
Not close enough to be friendly.
Close enough to stare.
