Eddie could not tell where New York ended anymore.

The city kept blinking.

Times Square.

A sewer.

A classroom.

A hospital hallway.

A burning military tent.

A rooftop in the rain.

Every time he tried to focus on one, another folded over it.

Magneto was above the city, carrying the Statue of Liberty through the sky like a warning from God.

No.

Not God.

Loki would have liked that.

Eddie blinked.

For half a second, Loki stood on the statue beside Magneto, arms spread, coat whipping in the wind as he laughed down at the city.

Then he was gone.

No.

Not gone.

Maybe never there.

Eddie staggered through the chaos below, trying to keep his mind wrapped around one reality at a time.

People ran past him, screaming. Cars slammed into one another. Streetlights bent. Metal signs ripped loose and spun upward toward Magneto like scraps caught in a storm.

A bus skidded across the road.

Eddie heard the tyres scream.

The vehicle came sideways through the intersection, windows full of terrified faces.

His body moved before his mind could catch up.

Black armour surged over his arms.

He planted his feet.

The bus slammed into him.

The front crushed around his hands.

His boots dug long trenches through the street as he was pushed backward, teeth gritted, muscles burning, the suit roaring across his shoulders.

Then the bus stopped.

Steam hissed from the ruined engine.

Eddie lifted his head.

The driver stared at him through the cracked windshield.

Red visor.

Brown hair.

Cyclops.

Eddie froze.

Cyclops leaned forward, both hands gripping the wheel.

Eddie blinked.

The visor was gone.

The driver was a middle-aged man with blood on his forehead, shaking so hard he could barely breathe.

Eddie stared at him.

The man stared back.

"Please," the driver whispered.

Eddie forced himself to move.

He grabbed the bus doors and tore them open.

"Out!" he shouted. "Everyone out!"

Passengers flooded past him.

A woman carrying a toddler.

A man clutching a briefcase.
