The doctor moved my arm around one last time, fingers pressing along the shoulder, elbow, wrist, all the way down to my hand like he was waiting for it to suddenly fall off again out of spite.

"It's healthy," he said at last, sounding more confused than relieved. "No scarring. No nerve damage. No sign it was ever severed in the first place."

I flexed my fingers just to make the point. They worked. Perfectly. Better than perfectly if I was being honest. Like the whole thing had never happened and my brain had just made the trauma up for fun.

"And," he added, glancing at the chart in his hand, "there are no signs of lingering gamma exposure. Your system is completely clean."

I looked up at him. "You say that like I won the lottery."

The doctor gave me a thin smile. "From what I've heard, young man, you more or less did."

"Yeah," I muttered, reaching for my shirt. "I seem to be getting a lot of that lately."

I pulled it on carefully, though the careful part was more habit than need. Everything felt fine. Better than fine. Which somehow made it all weirder.

The doctor stepped back, still clearly trying to solve me like I was a maths problem with too many answers.

"Well," he said, "you are all clear. If anything changes, any pain, dizziness, weakness, anything unusual, come back immediately."

I shrugged my jacket on. "So I'm good to go?"

"You are." He hesitated, then smiled in a more human way. "Though I would still very much like to know where you got that support item of yours. It seems to be a medical miracle."

I zipped the jacket halfway up and gave him my most innocent expression.

"That's strictly confidential."

He laughed under his breath and nodded. "I thought you might say that."

I gave him a little salute and headed for the door. "Thanks, Doc."

The hallway outside smelled like disinfectant and old coffee. I stuffed my hands into my pockets and made my way toward the elevator, rolling my neck once as I waited. The doors slid open with a soft chime and I stepped inside alone.

The second the doors shut, I let my head fall back against the wall.

"Waste of time," I muttered.

The black suit stirred under my clothes, a subtle shift against my skin.

I exhaled through my nose. "I'm Fine. We're fine."

That made it settle.

The elevator hummed on the way down, the mirrored wall in front of me giving me a tired version of myself to stare at. Hair a mess. Eyes still a little sunken. Looked like I'd been hit by a truck, died, got better, and still hadn't decided whether to be annoyed about it.

The doors opened into the lobby.

I stepped out, pushed through the hospital doors, and immediately stopped.

A black limo sat at the curb like a threat wearing expensive polish. One of Osborn's security guards stood beside it, all straight posture and blank expression, the sort of guy who looked like he ironed his soul every morning.

I made eye contact with him and rolled my eyes before he even opened his mouth.

"Mr. Osborn would like to speak to you."

"Doesn't everyone," I said, already walking past. "You can tell that slimy creep he needs to get in line, because I have better people to ghost than that parasite."
