The Raft looked exactly how a prison for people who could punch through buildings should look.

Ugly.

Cold.

Expensive.

It rose out of the water like someone had built a bunker, hated it, then decided to make it everyone else's problem too. Steel walls stacked on steel walls. Watchtowers. Drones. Searchlights even in the middle of the day. The whole place had this charming "one bad day away from a monster outbreak" vibe.

So, naturally, half my rogues' gallery was probably inside.

I stepped out of the transport and looked up at the prison.

"Home sweet trauma."

The guard beside me didn't laugh.

Tough crowd.

They escorted me through the first gate, then the second, then a reinforced hallway that scanned me from every angle. Red lights swept over my face, chest, arms, legs. The suit stayed quiet beneath my clothes, pretending to be nothing more than fabric.

Good boy.

Or bad boy.

Hard to tell these days.

At security, they had me stand in a square marked on the floor while machines hummed around me. A guard checked my ID. Another took my phone. A third asked if I had any weapons.

I held up my hands.

"Just these bad boys."

No one laughed again.

"Wow. You guys are allergic to joy."

The warden stood waiting beyond the checkpoint. Katsura, if I remembered the phone call right. Tall, stiff posture, grey hair, face like he had been carved out of paperwork and poor sleep.

"Mr. Parker," he said.

"Warden."

"You will follow all instructions exactly. You will not touch the prisoner unless ordered. You will not remove any restraints. You will not approach the glass unless permitted. You will not respond to provocation."

I nodded. "So no hugging. Got it."

His eyes didn't move.

"You will also refrain from jokes."

"That one might be a medical condition."

"Try."

He turned and started walking.

I followed.

The elevator waited at the end of the hall, thick enough to look like a bank vault tipped upright. The doors opened with a low groan, and we stepped inside with two armed guards.

The warden pressed his thumb to the panel.

The elevator began to descend.

Floor after floor.

The numbers kept dropping.

The air felt heavier the lower we went, like the building itself knew what it was sitting on top of.

"Endeavor himself requested you speak to the prisoner," the warden said.

I looked at him. "Endeavor?"

"Yes."

"Why would Endeavor of all people ask me to do this?"

The warden didn't answer.

I leaned back against the elevator wall. "And speaking of which, where is the Human Torch knock-off?"

One of the guards gave me a look.
