New York City had not learned how to live with powers yet.

The word quirk did not exist.

Not officially.

People called them Meta abilities. Mutations. Miracles. Curses. The news called them public hazards whenever something went wrong, which was often enough to keep the phrase in business.

Times Square was still packed anyway.

Tourists filled the pavements beneath glowing advertisements and towering screens. Families took photos. Street vendors shouted over one another. A group of students gathered around a performer dressed as Captain America, laughing as he posed with a plastic shield.

Then the building across the street exploded.

Glass rained over the road.

Fire burst through the shattered windows, followed by a screaming wall of metal.

Big Wheel tore out of the building.

The massive armored wheel crushed cars beneath its spinning tread, leaving deep black scorch marks across the road. Flames rolled from the sides of its frame as it ripped through traffic, sending taxis and street signs flying.

People scattered.

Someone screamed.

A police car tried to cut it off.

Big Wheel smashed through it without slowing down.

"Set up a perimeter on Fourth Street!" an officer shouted into his radio. "Cut him off! Get civilians out of the area!"

"No one can get near that thing!"

"Then keep them back!"

The wheel spun faster.

Inside the armored vehicle, Jackson Weele laughed through the speakers.

"Come on, New York!" he shouted. "You wanted something new! Here it is!"

Big Wheel turned toward an intersection.

A school bus sat trapped in traffic.

Children pressed against its windows, crying as the driver tried desperately to reverse.

The huge wheel roared toward them.

Police raised their weapons.

They knew it would not matter.

Then something black crossed the sky.

A streak.

Fast enough to blur.

It hit Big Wheel from above.

Tendrils snapped around the machine, thick black coils wrapping around the metal frame. The wheel lifted off the ground with a scream of grinding steel, dragged upward by sheer force.

Jackson Weele yelled from inside.

"What the hell is this?!"

The tendrils tightened.

Then slammed Big Wheel back down.

The impact split the road.

The machine crashed hard enough to explode on touchdown, fire bursting from its sides as metal twisted into a useless wreck.

Smoke rolled across the street.

For a second, nobody moved.

Then a shape stepped onto the burning remains.

Black armor covered him from head to toe.

Not polished.

Not clean.
