By the time I got back to the agency, the sky had gone all warm and bruised with sunset, the kind of color that makes everything look softer than it is.
I landed just outside, stretched both arms over my head, and let the suit ripple off me. Black gave way to my usual casual stuff, just a T-shirt and shorts like I hadn't spent the whole day running around the island solving everyone else's problems one disaster at a time.
I cracked my fingers, rolled my neck, and headed inside.
The smell hit first.
Food.
Actual food. Warm, salty, fried, amazing food.
The whole class was gathered around the main room, sitting in little groups, eating and talking over each other. It looked almost cozy. Almost normal.
I considered just ghosting them and heading straight to my room.
Then Bakugo ruined that plan.
"Well, look who finally crawled back," he barked from his spot on the floor. "The social reject returns."
I stopped in the doorway and turned to him, mostly out of spite. Ever since he ratted me out over the vigilante stuff, I'd decided politeness toward him was a limited resource.
Still, I put on my best brave face and gave everyone a lazy wave.
"Hey," I said. "Good job today, everyone. We all really went Plus Ultra, huh?"
A few people gave me tired smiles. Kaminari looked like he was about to make a joke. Yaoyorozu beat him to it.
"Where have you been all this time?" she asked, setting her chopsticks down. "You were meant to rotate back hours ago."
"Yeah, dude," Kirishima added. "People were starting to get worried."
I shrugged, heading farther inside. "Got a little sidetracked."
That earned me a collective stare.
So I kept going.
"Someone drove their car into a ditch, so I had to pull it out. Then there was a puppy that fell into the sea, a missing wedding ring, furniture moving, stopping a boat thief, and preventing a forest fire." I reached the table and looked over the food. "And that was just the afternoon. All in a day's work for your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man."
There was a beat of silence.
Then Jiro deadpanned, "You know there are twenty other heroes in training here, right?"
"Yeah," I said, grabbing a bowl of fried chicken. "But where's the point in that? Faster to do it myself."
I popped a piece into my mouth and immediately got hit with the kind of joy only fried food can give a tired person. "What'd you guys get? I'm starving."
I barely got two bites in before Jiro snatched the bowl clean out of my hands and set it back on the table.
"Or," she said, "you could come back down to earth and breathe for five minutes."
I stared at the bowl like I'd just been robbed in broad daylight.
"Fine," I muttered, grabbing a pair of chopsticks instead and fishing around for something else. "Rude."
I sat down with them, finally letting my body sag now that I wasn't swinging or lifting or pretending I had infinite energy.
The room buzzed around me again. Familiar voices. Plates clinking. Someone laughing too loud. It should've been relaxing.
