Hiro had been flipping through every news channel for the last ten minutes like the remote owed him money.
Every station was the same.
Breaking news banners. Helicopter shots. Burning buildings. Crowds running through smoke. Pros trying to contain riots that were not riots. Police dragging masked civilians into barricades while reporters screamed over one another about outbreaks, missing persons, explosions, and whether the city was entering emergency lockdown.
"This is insane," Hiro muttered, switching channels again.
Another screen. Another fire.
Another shot of someone getting tackled by three police officers while clawing at a white mask fused to their face.
"What is happening?" Hiro asked, voice rising. "How is it everywhere at once?"
I walked in with my phone in one hand, thumb scrolling too fast, my clothes already shifting beneath the surface.
Jacket tightening.
Sleeves darkening.
Black crawling up my collar.
Then I realized everyone was still in the room.
The suit stopped halfway, pretending to be a perfectly normal outfit because apparently even alien death goo understood awkward timing.
I cleared my throat and leaned against the wall like I had not just been two seconds away from bailing through the nearest window scratching my chin a sudden itch forming.
"So," I said casually, "how bad are we looking?"
Jubilee shot me a look from the sofa. "Bad enough that we should be out there."
She pointed at the TV, where another reporter ducked as something exploded behind her.
"This is literally what we just got on TV to do. Save people. Be the Young Avengers. Remember that whole dramatic reveal thing? Lights, cameras, destiny?" She threw her hands out. "We're going to be forgotten at this rate."
Baymax turned his head toward her. "Heroism is not for fame or fortune. As Avengers, we have a moral duty to protect others."
Jubilee pointed at him. "Bit hard to do that, marshmallow, when we're grounded."
I looked at the screen again.
A pro hero I didn't recognise was carrying two unconscious civilians over one shoulder while police tried to stop a wave of Faceless from breaking through a shopping district.
"Jubilee's right that people need help," I said.
She perked up.
"But the pros can handle it."
She immediately deflated. "Betrayal."
I kept going before she could start throwing pillows. "This isn't our fight to fight. Not yet. The best course of action is to listen to the actual heroes, stay put, and not make things worse."
Jubilee stared at me like I had just started speaking Latin.
"Where did this character development come from?"
I flashed her the cheekiest smile I could manage. "I'm full of surprises."
Psylocke, who had been standing by the windows with her arms folded, did not look convinced.
Hiro kept clicking through news feeds, one after another. "We should at least keep monitoring. If we spot a pattern, maybe we can pass it to Hawkeye or Captain America."
