The city was already on fire by the time we hit the street.
Smoke rolled between half-collapsed towers. Cars were overturned, alarms blaring into the chaos. Somewhere above us, the sky had been split open by a huge circular tear of blue-white light, and from it poured wave after wave of enemy craft and soldiers in black metal armor. They dropped from the portal like rot shaking loose from the sky.
People were screaming.
Running.
Pointing up.
The noise hit me first. Not the sound itself. The weight of it. Sirens, explosions, collapsing buildings, shouting civilians, the low mechanical shriek of the invading fleet overhead. It all pressed down at once until my brain barely knew what to latch onto first.
"Okay!" Jubilee yelled, staring up as another transport screamed across the skyline. "Little bit out of my depth here! A lot out of my depth! Maybe all the way out!"
"That's helpful!" Ashido snapped, grabbing a civilian by the shoulders and shoving them toward cover.
I was already moving.
"Baymax, Hiro, hold the front!" I shouted. "Psylocke, protect the civilians from anything that slips through!"
Hiro's voice came back through the comms, strained but sharp. "We need a tighter perimeter first!"
"We don't have time for a perimeter!"
Baymax was already in motion anyway, his massive body acting like a living shield as he stepped in front of a blast and absorbed the hit with a heavy thud. Hiro darted behind him, launching drones that cracked against incoming enemies in flashes of blue. Psylocke moved through the gaps like a blade given purpose, her telekinetic katana carving apart whatever got too close to the evacuation line.
That left me, Ashido, and Jubilee in the middle of the mess.
"Right side street!" Ashido shouted. "They're pinning people down over there!"
"No, if we don't take the skies they'll just keep dropping more!" I fired a web up and yanked myself onto a broken traffic light, scanning the field. "Jubilee, blind the ones pushing up the avenue!"
Jubilee pointed at herself, offended. "You say that like I know what I'm doing!"
"You throw fireworks at the bad guys! That seems very self-explanatory!"
She let out a frustrated yell and did exactly that, a spray of colorful blasts bursting out and forcing a line of invaders back. It worked, but only for a second. Another wave dropped in right behind them.
Ashido looked up at me from the ground, acid sizzling around her fists. "We need to stay together!"
"We need to stop that portal!"
"And how exactly are we doing both?" Jubilee cut in.
I dropped back down, irritation burning hotter than it should have.
"Simple," I said. "We move where it matters instead of standing around arguing."
Ashido stared at me. "That's not what we're doing."
"It kind of is."
"Y/N," Hiro called through the comms, voice tighter now, "we need to coordinate!"
I looked up again.
More ships.
More troops.
More civilians trapped.
And suddenly every second spent talking felt like a waste of oxygen.
