we made no attempt at hiding the sounds of our stumbling in the woods our selves. my bleeding left a trail for the keen dogs sense of smell to track. no point in hiding. our only option, was to run. and so we did. clear was running ahead of me. his longer legs pulling in to the front. while my own, slightly shorter and one of them injured could only fight to stay close. the sky was dark save for the star which shone. no moon was to be high, to grant us with safe moonlight. instead shadows and darkness greeted our eyes and our feet. but, this did not bother clear as he led me along. and i think i know why. rei and her husband. they are always in the light. their eyes are not adjusted to the darkness. they have even more trouble seeing than we do. this was a small comfort as we dashed, being closely followed by the loud blood thirsty mutt and their cruel owners. our current path led us towards slick slippery mud, and close to a wide river, which flowed lazily, carving a deep path in the ground which we hand make our way down to cross the river.

"once we cross the dogs shouldn't be able to find us for little while. should help us loose them. he hurried down the dark muddy hill side to the water. which seemed more like black ink in the night time. clears hand still pulling me forwards. but he pulled too hard. my balance went, and i crashed down into the mud, sliding under clear and collapsing us both as we tumble down ward towards the water. i cried out as my leg caught between tree roots which was poking through the surface of the earth on the river banks. i couldn't move.

"NARUTO!!!!" clear yelled as he sloppily tried to make his way over to me."hang on, i'll get you out!" he stumbled over himself, and i could hear the faint sounds of dogs. growing louder. closer. a thought came to my mind then. unbidden it tore through the plains of consciousness and i was faced with a grim truth. sadness gripped my heart in a fierce relentless sort of way. "just hang on! i will be right there!" i took a deep breath and my eyes slid closed as i prepared myself to do what i had to. the dog came closer.

"NO!" i screamed out at clear. he faltered in movement towards me. "don't come!" clear blinked at me, and moved quicker towards me.
in ernest.
in vain.

he stopped next to me.
"naru, hang on. i wont leave you behind!" i gazed sadly into his eyes eyes and shook my head.

"no. leave me."

"i cant!" he said tear trickling down his cheek.

"yes you can. you have to. if you stay, Rei will get us both." i spoke calmly, trying to ignore the dogs which seemed to grow unbearable. loud. clear was running out of time. "leave me. i cant run fast anyway. if i had tried to keep going, she would have caught us both.

"no! naru, i-" clear sobbed.

"shhh~ it will be okay. you'll see. one day. we will see each other again." clear shakily stood up, and slowly inched away. hesitating all the while. tears streamed down his face.

"naru,"

"hurry!" i yelled at clear, they were close. too close. "run!!" i screamed. and crying, clear turned, and ran. his form fading into the shadows of the forest. "good bye. brother." i whisper softly. though there was only the rustle of trees to console me.
i was crying softly to myself, as the dogs engulfed me.
