Hermione wasn't thrilled to learn flying lessons were going to start soon and it was with Slytherin. She didn't care to be around Malfoy. He always was giving her glares and was teasing her every chance he got. Also flying doesn't exactly have textbooks to help you with them. It was like a P.E. class and Hermione wasn't exactly good at those either. But not only was flying what was bothering her. Students all around were discussing about Quidditch tryouts and how unfair it was for first-years telling each other how it was unfair for them to not have brooms. She didn't really see the deal, but she was like her Grandma. She was more into the academics than sports. Hermione even overhead Neville explaining how his Grandma never let him have a broomstick. Personally, Hermione felt his Grandma was right in that choice.
At breakfast, Hermione told Neville about all the flying tips she had found in a book called Quidditch Through the Ages that she felt Neville would like to know. Her lecture was interrupted by mail. Hermione noticed Harry hadn't gotten any letter and noticed Malfoy took note. Malfoy's eagle owl always brought him gifts of sweets from home, which he purposely gloated from the Slytherin table. Hermione usually got letters from her Grandma explaining what's going on at home or asking how school was. She also brought sweets from Honeydukes or her usual homemade sweets she made from home.
Neville's owl brought him a small package from his Grandmother. He opened it excitedly and showed a glass ball full of white smoke.
"It's a Remembrall!" He explained, "Gran knows I forget things-- this tells you if there's something you've forgotten to do. Look, you hold it tight like this and if it turns red-- Oh..." His face fell as he watched the smoke start to glow scarlet, "... you've forgotten something."
Neville was trying to remember what he'd forgotten when Draco, who had passed their table, snatched the Remembrall out of his hand. Hermione jumped from her seat, ready to demand Draco to put it back. However, Profess McGonagall, who could spot trouble quicker than any teacher, was there in a heartbeat.
"What's going on?"
"Malfoy's got my Remembrall, Professor."
Malfoy soon dropped it back on the table, which Hermione pushed it closer to Neville so Malfoy didn't even attempt to try to take it.
"Just looking," He said before hurrying back to Crabbe and Goyle.
Hermione stood beside the rest of the Gryffindors and Slytherin on the lawns in front of the twenty or so broomsticks laying on the ground. She noticed the brooms seemed a bit too old to still be in use. Hermione noticed Madam Hooch soon arrived.
"Well, what are you all waiting for? Everyone stand by a broomstick. Come on, hurry up." She ordered them. Hermione quickly moved over to a broom that appeared ready to snap in two, "Stick out your right hand over your broom, and say 'Up'!"
"Up!" everyone shouted. Hermione noticed her broom was rolling around like it didn't want to even move closer to her. She felt embarrassed when she saw the others' brooms starting to shoot up before hers. Thankfully, the broom finally shot up into her hand. Madam Hooch showed them how to mount their brooms without sliding off the end.
"Now when I blow my whistle, you kick off from the ground hard. Keep your brooms steady, rise a few feet and then come straight back down by leaning forward slightly. On my whistle--- three--- two---" Madam Hooch started but was stopped when Neville began rising from the ground and going higher and higher.
"Come down, boy!" she shouted but Neville was rising straight up. Hermione watched as suddenly Neville slide off the broom and started to descend to the ground. Hermione turned away to not see when Neville hit the ground. There was a loud thud, and Hermione raised her head to see the broom fly off towards the Forbidden Forest.
"Broken wrist," Hermione heard her mutter, "None of you is to move while I take this boy to the hospital wing! You leave those brooms where they are or you'll be out of Hogwarts before you can say 'Quidditch'."
Madam Hooch soon vanished, leading Neville behind her towards the castle.
"Did you see his face, the great lump?" Malfoy suddenly said while the other Slytherins joined in on laughing.
"Shut up, Malfoy!" snapped Parvati Patil.
"Ooh, sticking up for Longbottom?" Pansy Parkinson, a hard-faced Slytherin girl, said. "Never thought you'd like fat little crybabies, Parvati."
"Look!" Malfoy said, grabbing something from the grass, "It's that stupid thing Longbottom's Gran sent him."
"Give that here, Malfoy," Harry told him off.
"I think I'll leave it somewhere for Longbottom to find. How about the roof?" Malfoy said before shooting up into the air. Hermione watched as Harry began getting on his broom.
"Harry! No!" Hermione cried out to him, "Madam Hooch told us not to move! You'll get us all into trouble."
Harry ignored her as he went flying up into the air. She mumbled 'what an idiot' under her breath as she watched Harry and Malfoy fighting. Soon Harry went flying across the sky. Hermione didn't know what was happening but a few minutes later, she saw Harry was flying towards them. He was swinging around his arm, holding something in his hand. The moment he landed on the ground everyone began to go crazy for him to get Neville's Remembrall.
"HARRY POTTER!" Everyone soon was silent when they saw McGonagall hurrying over towards them, "Come with me." She ordered. Hermione watched as Harry walked behind her with his head held low, looking like a prisoner about to head to Azkaban.
