INT. SURFER BOY PIZZA VAN - DAY (SOME TIME LATER)
Mike and Will are sitting in the backseat of the surfer boy pizza van, at the gas station. Jonathan and Argyle are inside buying snacks and water. They are headed back to Hawkins, Indiana.
WILL
You never told me what you got grounded for.
Mike sighs. He grimaces.
MIKE
I bought a joint.
WILL
(laughing)
What?
Mike groans.
WILL
Wait, seriously? That's why you got grounded?
MIKE
Yeah.
WILL
(laughing)
You. Michael Wheeler, bought a joint?
MIKE
(annoyed)
Oh, spare me the lecture. I've already heard it.
Will wants to know more. His curiosity is peaked.
WILL
(laughing)
Where did you even get it?
MIKE
Eddie -the senior who runs the hellfire club, I bought it from him.
Will looks down when he mentions the hellfire club.
MIKE
(stammering)
I didn't even smoke it! But my mom found it in my room and she told my dad and then bam!
Mike throws his hands up, exasperated.
MIKE
I'm grounded.
Will looks entirely amused. Boy, is he enjoying this.
WILL
Did you even try to hide it?
MIKE
Ha ha ha. Very funny Will.
Will chuckles.
WILL
I bet that was a fun conversation.
Mike huffs.
MIKE
(sarcastically)
Oh yeah.
WILL
Guess I missed more than I thought.
There's a twinge of sadness in Will's voice, Mike can hear it.
WILL
Did Dustin buy one too? Didn't you say that Dustin was in that club with Eddie also? Are you guys all like stoners now?
Will doesn't want to say "that club's" name.
MIKE
Yeah he is, but uh, no, it was just me.
Will furrows his brow.
WILL
Did Lucas or Max?
Mike shakes his head no.
WILL
Do they know?
MIKE
Know what?
WILL
(teasingly)
That you're like a stoner now.
MIKE
(annoyed)
I am not! I didn't even smoke it!
WILL
So then why'd you get it?
MIKE
I just wanted to try it, thought it might, I don't know, take the edge off a little bit.
There's a heaviness in Mike's voice that wasn't there just a few seconds before. Will takes notice of the sudden shift in Mike's tone.
Will decides to stop his good-natured teasing and his voice becomes more gentle.
WILL
Take the edge off of what?
MIKE
Just...stuff.
Mike's attempt to blow off Will's intrigue fails. Will knows there's more to the story than "just stuff". He knows Mike too well to know that he wouldn't do something like this without a reason.
WILL
Okay, but what kind of stuff?
Thankfully, he's saved as the door's to the front seats swing open as Jonathan and Argyle pile in. Mike and Will get quiet immediately. Jonathan and Argyle pass SNACKS and WATER to Mike and Will in the back.
ARGYLE
Woah, there's weird vibes in here mannn. What were you guys talking about?
Will can see Mike looks uncomfortable, no, more sad than uncomfortable, so Will attempts to bring the light-heartedness of their conversation back.
WILL
(teasingly)
Oh you know, just talking about how Mike's a stoner now.
ARGYLE
Alrighttt, high five, man!
He reaches his arm out for Mike to high five him, but Mike just glares at Argyle and scrunches up his face in disgust.
JONATHAN
(laughing)
Seriously?
MIKE
(exasperated)
I am not! I bought ONE joint!
He holds up one finger, as if that's somehow going to convince them more.
ARGYLE
It's all good man, no judgement here.
MIKE
Can you PLEASE stop saying "man" in every sentence?
ARGYLE
Okay fine, have it your way dude.
Mike groans and throws his head back against his seat. It's gonna be a long ride back to Hawkins.
Jonathan and Argyle turn their attention back to the map, so Will takes this opportunity to glance over at Mike, who is slumping in his seat with his head thrown so far back it's gotta be hurting his neck.
First running away, then breaking down in my room a few nights ago, and now he's doing drugs? What's going on with him?
