Steve spent the whole weekend being dragged around by the kids from the mall the arcade and back to their houses. He is exhausted and now he's back at school dreading seeing one person. The one person he knows he knows he can't avoid.
Billy struts into class shoulders held high, eyebrows furrowed, and his "don't fuck with me" scowl in place. Steve immediately notices his blackeye on his right eye. Billy sits beside Steve as usual, but Billy doesn't even spare Steve as much as a glance.
Billy knows Steve is looking at him with his worried mom's face, but he's too pissed off at the world to trust himself in saying something nice to Steve. No matter how much of a crush he has on him. He knows he can't even keep himself from blowing up in Steve's face. Even if Billy would be the one hurt the most if he hurt Steve...again.
Steve was going to say something to Billy, but class started before he could.
Then after class, Billy rushes out purposely avoiding Steve. For his next three classes, Steve doesn't even pay attention. All he can think about is Billy and where he could've gotten that blackeye. He hasn't heard of any recent fights, and it's been there for long enough to get purple.
He knows it wasn't there Saturday night because Billy picked Max up from the Bryers house that night. Steve definitely would've remembered if he had a blackeye.
Steve is the first out of the classroom when lunch starts. Instead of going to the gym, Steve sets out to find Billy. He quickly finds Billy right before he enters the cafeteria. Billy was following Tommy and Carol, but Steve just goes up and grabs his arm and started pulling him away which Billy freaked out about for a second.
"Hey! What- Steve?" Billy half-shouted until he realized its Steve.
"Come on" was all Steve had to say and Billy lets himself be pulled down the hallway away from the gym.
Sometime during their walk, they started to hold hands but neither of them said anything about it even though they both are blushing. Steve more than Billy of course.
Steve leads Billy into the old art room, they cut the art program during Steve's freshman year to repair the school gym, but he still loves the room. There's nothing special about the room but it's secluded and Steve figured it would be the best place to talk.
They both let go of each other's hands and sit down. Billy sits on top of an old desk facing the teacher's desk and Steve sits on top of the teacher's desk facing Billy.
"So, what's up princess?" he starts with a grin.
"Billy,... who hit you?" Billy's grin quickly faded at Steve's question.
"Just some douche bag. What? Are you worried about me princess?" Billy teased but Steves's face stayed the same.
"Billy I'm serious, who hit you? And don't say it was just 'some douche bag' because I know you just give me a name or at least how old they were" Steve continued to push.
"Damn it, Steve! Why does it matter so much?" Billy yells but avoids eye contact with Steve.
Steve sighs before pushing again, he's determined for Billy to admit what's going on before he gets himself hurt or killed.
"Please just tell me who it was. I know you didn't pick a fight and I also know you wouldn't let some douche bag land such an easy hit on you. Who hurt you, Billy? Please."
Billy tenses up but when Steve places his hand on his knee Billy finally gives out.
" Goddammit, Steve! Why do you have to care so much about every one! It was my dad! OKAY? It's by fucking deadbeat father! The dick hit me Saturday night for bringing Max home late." by the time he's done ranting Billy is almost in tears. Steve leans over and whispers to him.
"Would you like a hug?"
Billy rubs his eyes before responding "yeah I would like a hug princess."
Steve goes over to Billy's desk and wraps his arms around him and Billy places his face in Steve's neck. They stay like that quietly for a while until Billy laughs.
"I guess princess should be my nickname now."
"No way, I'm still princess you're my courageous knight in shining armor. That doesn't mean you have to be strong all the time. I prefer the real you over some fake buff knight with no brain."
Billy pulls slightly back to where they're still in each other's arms. They are now just looking into each other's eyes with their lips inches apart. Neither one of them can say anything. They both feel as if time has stopped just for them. As they stare into each others eyes. It's something Steve has only seen in movies and it's the most magical thing he has ever experienced. Billy is the one who finally leans in and Steve starts to move his hand to Billy's cheek. Then...
The bells rings for the fourth period. It's loud and shrill and they both pull away and let go of each other.
Billy leaves Steve with a small wink and a whispered "goodbye princess.".
Steve stays in the art room freaking out about what just happened.
"I almost kissed Billy!" "oh my god, I almost kissed Billy. I have a fucking crush on Billy."
He kept pacing until he remembered why he almost kissed Billy.
"That fucking asshole! I need to convince Billy to let me call Hopper. If not I'm murdering his father."
He knows he can't do anything about his dad, but he can do something about the fact that he made Billy miss lunch. But he doesn't regret it.
He does really regret causing Billy to miss lunch, so he heads to the school's kitchen not caring about missing class. Although he knows he'll regret it whenever his parents pay their yearly visit.
It's easy for Steve to get into the kitchen by picking the lock but making a meal out of what's in there is going to be the problem. In the fridge, there's some leftover meatloaf from lunch that day. So Steve finds a paper plate and puts a scoop on one corner.
Steve continues to search through every cabinet in the kitchen while sing mumbling the lyrics to Prince's 'Purple Rain". He gets to the chorus when all the lights flicker.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Steve retreats into the corner of the room and hides in between two cabinets. He can feel his heart pounding in his chest and his hands trembling while fisted in his stupidly styled hair. He can hear their feet thudding after him and he can hear their screams as those things ripped them apart, saving him for last. He's suddenly back in the tunnels it's like it's happening all over again but worse. He wants to scream but the only thing he can do is run. When he reaches the end of the tunnel he turns around ready to fight with his bat in his hand when it all stops.
The real world comes back into view and he's still sitting in between the two cabinets now pulling on his hair. He releases his grip on his hair and starts to pull himself up on wobbly legs. That's when he notices the tears streaking down his face.
Once he gets up he grabs the paper plate with two hands so that his still shaky hands don't drop it and starts walking out of the school.
He only had meatloaf and a fruit cup on the plate and another class left but he doesn't care.
Steve puts Billy's food on the hood of his car with a random napkin he doesn't remember picking up placed it over the food and tucked it under so that it doesn't fly away.
He then gets into his car and drives home with shaking hands and unstable legs.
At home, Steve doesn't care to eat he just collapses on his bed and cries until he falls asleep. Soon to be woken up by another horrible nightmare.
Back at school, Billy worried about Steve being gone at the end of the day and he wonders if he scared him away for good.
