It had been pretty touch and go, when Nancy had found Eddie and Dustin, broken and crying together in a clearing of corpses. She'd screamed for help and Steve and Robin had come running.

Steve started crying as soon as the boys, his boys , came into view. He pushed through, though, knowing that if they didn't get help fast, he was going to be planning at least one funeral.

He didn't want to fucking do that.

So they pushed and pulled, tried to jostle Eddie as little as possible while Dustin insisted on limping to the gate himself, the selfless brat. Wonder where he gets it from.

Eddie had wheezed and moaned and cried, but he held on, and that was all they needed him to do. Nancy had trained herself on emergency medical procedures after Starcourt, bought the right supplies at the War Zone, and pushed everyone out of the way while Robin ran to phone for an ambulance.

Steve stayed. And held Eddie's hand, as if that would keep him there, with him. As if it would keep himself together.

At least he was a silent crier, would be kind of embarrassing to be in hysterics while the rest of them were doing something. Anything to help.

It was... A lot of damage. Eddie had faced off an entire swarm of demo-bats, alone. Nancy told him she wasn't sure Eddie could make it, he'd lost so much blood.

Steve closed his eyes and cried.

Prayed to some, any higher power that might be listening, that Eddie would pull through.

Robin walked back into the room, looking grim. She'd said there was an "earthquake" and that all ambulances within a 20 mile radius were already deployed.

Eddie was on his own.

Steve brought his and Eddie's intertwined hands to his lips and muttered, "Just one more time, baby. Be strong for me one more time." He was begging, he needed Eddie to be okay.

Nancy had sent him a look, but she was quick to refocus on stitching Eddie back together.

When she was done, she settled a comforting hand on Eddie's chest, where his heart is, and asked him to please pull through. All that work she just did had to be for something , right? Robin laughed, wetly, and told her to wash up.

When Nancy left the room, she followed.

It truly was up to Eddie now.

Steve kissed his hand, then his forehead, and stood. There was nothing he could do, at that point, and Dustin was in the corner trying to set his own leg.

Poorly, and probably painfully from the looks of it. Steve sighed and went over to help, he'd learned a few things himself, Nancy wasn't the only medic.
