Later that evening when everything was done at the Institute, Magnus had persuaded Alec that he needed some rest. Now they were back at his apartment, in bed, and Alec was still restless. Eventually, though they both fell into an uneasy sleep.
An hour later, he had awoken to Alec softly crying in his sleep, "Alexander, it's okay. I'm here."
He had watched and waited, but Alexander had remained on his side facing away from him. Sighing, he slowly reached out and pulled on his shoulder. Alec turned over; blue, red tinged eyes met his and his voice shake when he spoke, "I'm sorry, for waking you."
Magnus reached up and placed his hand on the side of his face, "Don't be. Tell me what you need."
Alec avoided looking in his eyes, "I can't. I'm not- "
"Look at me," he commanded gently. Once Alec complied, he continued, "When things get bad, don't push me away."
Tears fell from Alec's eyes, "I don't mean too - I just, I feel like this is my fault."
"It's not and we will get Jace back. I promise. Please don't push me away, Alexander. What can I do?"
Instead of answering, Alec hugged Magnus and burrowed his face into his chest. Magnus shifted to accommodate him and held him close. Tears started soaking through his shirt and without a word- he held him tighter.
They stayed like that for over an hour. Eventually, Alec fell asleep, but Magnus didn't let go and held him through the night and for many nights after that.
