EXT. LENORA HILLS, CALIFORNIA - BUS STOP - DAY
Mike gets off the bus, squinting. He looks around at sunny Lenora Hills, California, then grabs a spare map from the bus stop, clumsily unfolding it. He pulls a note out of his pocket; on it we see the Byers new address scribbled on a worn scrap of paper. Above the address, in Will's handwriting, we can see "Write to me - Will"
Mike stares at the address and then back at the map, until he figures out where he's going. He stuffs the note back in his pocket and takes off.
EXT. BYERS HOUSE STREET - DAY
Mike approaches the Byers house, it looks the same as when he was here for thanksgiving. He pauses outside for just a second, he's nervous to see Will again. Mike walks up to the Byers front door. He rings the doorbell. No answer. He rings it again. Then again, and again, until he is pressing it constantly.
INT. - BYERS HOUSE - DINING ROOM - DAY
Joyce sits at the dining room table, rifling through some PAPERS. She looks distraught.
Will is sitting in the living room, reading.
JOYCE
(frustrated)
Will, can you get that, please?
Will groans slightly and tosses his book down on the CHAIR. He reluctantly gets up and walks over to the front door.
INT. BYERS HOUSE - DOORWAY - DAY
Will opens the door.
WILL
(in disbelief)
Mike?!
He came.
Mike beams. Will. Exactly the person he wanted to see.
WILL
What are you doing here?! Your mom said you were grounded!
MIKE
I am but, I came anyway.
A smile creeps across Will's face until he is in a full grin.
It's been too long.
Joyce calls out from the dining room.
JOYCE
Will? Who's there?
Will doesn't turn around to tell her. He keeps his gaze fixated on Mike, overcome with emotion.
WILL
It's... Mike.
Will and Mike can't stop themselves from smiling. Light pink begins to spread across their faces, but then:
JOYCE
MIKE?!
She hurriedly gets out of her CHAIR and rushes to the front door.
JOYCE
What?! Oh my god...come in, come in.
Mike and Will are snapped out of their trance momentarily as Mike steps inside the doorway.
JOYCE
(panicked)
What are you doing here your mom called yesterday to tell me you weren't coming anymore because you were grounded!
MIKE
I was- I mean I am, but I wanted to come anyway. I couldn't miss Will's birthday.
Will grins even more.
JOYCE
(alarmed)
Wha-how did you get here? Oh my, wait, do your parents even know you're here?
MIKE
I took a bus, and no, not exactly...
WILL
You ran away?!
JOYCE
(frantically)
I better call your parents and let them know you're here, and that you're SAFE. For god's sake you probably gave your mother a heart attack!
