The four Marauders walked the school hallway together like they always did. Peter was trailing a little after them because they had to swerve their way through the crowd. The dining hall was emptying as they left while everyone was heading back to the dorms. Sirius was talking about his latest prank idea.

"So once we get the supplies from Zonko's, we'll have to use the map to place the distraction dung bombs," Sirius informed them all. James nodded enthusiastically while Remus rolled his eyes. Peter had just gotten back into step with them.

"You know mate, I don't know how you do it! Brilliant that mind of yours," James praised his best friend.

"Well I learned from the best of friends," Sirius said back. James took a dramatic bow that sent them all into a fit of laughter.

"Look at Potter, no doubt making a fool of himself again," They heard a familiar voice interrupt.

"Oh get lost Snivellus, you're reeking up the hallways," Sirius rolled his eyes.

"I don't plan on sticking around anyway," He sneered at them, "James's attitude might rub off on me. I don't want to be nearly as posh as he is."

"Then keep on walking," Remus snapped. Snape scoffed and shoved past the four Gryffindors.

James's shoulders had dropped and his head drooped low. Sirius noticed immediately and patted him on the back.

"Oi don't mind him. You know Snape's just jealous that we know how to properly wash our hair," He mocked. The other Marauders laughed but James only let a weak smile show.

Remus frowned and looked at his other two friends. They knew what was coming now. Ever since James had developed bipolar disorder, his mood was prone to rapid changes. He was in between episodes right now, which made him even more susceptible to his feelings. The scale could tip one way or the other and it seemed to be tipping negatively.

The group said nothing as they entered the common room. Peter was about to offer a game of snaps but James continued towards the stairs without stopping. They all shared a knowing look and followed after him. When they got to their dorm room, James was already sitting on his bed.

"Hey, why don't we go over Sirius's prank idea again, see if we can come up with more?" Peter suggested. They all knew pranks usually improved their friend's mood, but James just shook his head.

"I'm tired," He stated. Remus took a step forward.

"If this is about Snape then don't let it get to you. We all know how he is," Remus said. James said nothing.

"Come on mate, why don't we play a game or something? Talk about quidditch?" Remus tried again. Personally, Remus didn't care much for quidditch talk, but he knew James loved it. Still, no response other than a shake off his head was given.

"James, you don't need to worry about what people think," Sirius stepped in, "You're one of the brightest wizards here. So what if that comes off as overconfidence sometimes. All of us are guilty of that."

"Peter's not," James argued, "He has skill but he doesn't show off."

"That's cause I have anxiety," Peter joked. Remus and Sirius chuckled.

James made a face before tugging off his robe and tossing it to the floor. The others watched quietly as he laid back on his bed.

"James," Sirius spoke quietly, "You can talk to us or just one of us that you'd be comfortable to talk to, you know?"
