Harry woke up slowly and immediately realized that something was wrong. His head was pounding and it was hard to breathe through his nose. He sneezed.
This could only mean one thing: he was sick.
"Ugh," he groaned, rolling onto his back. There was a shuffle beside him, which meant that his husband was waking up.
He sneezed again.
"Harry, are you alright?" Draco asked. There was a hint of concern in his voice. Harry turned again so he was facing him.
"Just a sneeze. I'm fine." Harry inwardly winced. His own voice sounded hoarse and foreign to his ears. His throat felt raw.
Draco reached out and placed the back of his hand on Harry's forehead. He shuddered at the sudden coldness, but it felt nice as it relieved some of the ache.
"No you're not," Draco said and looked at him with a worried expression. "You're running a fever." The cold hand moved to press on Harry's cheek.
"Thank you for your assessment, Healer Malfoy." Harry moved his hand away. He wished the Healer would let it go. He felt fine, which he expressed to the other man.
He moved to get out of bed, but his body protested. His joints ached. He groaned in pain and laid back down again, his head hitting his pillow. He hated being sick. He had so much stuff at work he needed to do. He also had a meeting with Robards, the Head Auror, and the Minister sometime that afternoon.
Harry sat up again, pulling back the covers and swung his legs over the edge of the bed. He shivered as his bare feet touched the cold floor and the room was chilly, too. Harry was tempted to crawl back in the warm bed with Draco, but he had-no-needed to go to work.
He was helping Ron solve a case and they were so close to catching the culprit. He could feel it. He needed to look over the evidence again. He needed to double check the witness accounts, too, as he might have overlooked an important detail. He was missing a piece of the puzzle and Harry was determined to find out what it was.
Harry felt a firm hand on his shoulder and heard a voice behind him ask, "where do you think you're going?"
"I'm fine," Harry repeated again. "I'm going to work."
He had no time to get sick. He wanted the culprit found, so he could arrest them and put on trial. That was his top priority.
"Like hell you are," Draco said sternly. Harry recognized his voice as his "healer voice", which he used when his patients at St. Mungo's didn't want to cooperate with him. "You are not getting out of this bed. The ministry will survive a day without their best Auror."
"Watch me," Harry said stubbornly. He stood up suddenly, which was not a good thing as he felt unsteady on his feet and slightly dizzy. He sat on the edge of the bed again.
Draco moved to lay Harry back down, so he rested his head on the pillows. "Looks like you're staying in bed today. Don't argue with me." His tone sounded final. "Let me grab you a potion. I'll be back in a moment." Harry knew it was a lost cause now, especially when his husband went into Healer Malfoy mode.
Draco got up then and left the room. Harry already missed the warm presence of the other man next to him. He closed his eyes, curling up under the covers. He didn't know how long they were closed as he was lightly shaken awake by Draco, who looked apologetic. Harry noticed he had a silver tray ladened with a small potion bottle, a cup of tea, and a plate with a couple pieces of toast in his hands.
He handed Harry the potion first, sitting on the edge of bed by Harry's legs. "Drink this."
Harry sat up and did as he was told. He grimaced at the taste as soon as the potion touched his tongue. Draco smirked slightly at Harry's reaction. He hated taking potions, but he recognized it as the Pepper-Up potion, as some of his symptoms started to clear up soon after.
"Sorry, love." Draco said, but Harry thought he didn't sound apologetic at all.
"No you're not, you prat." He passed the empty bottle back to Draco.
"Stubborn git," Draco retorted, as he handed him the tea and toast next. Harry looked at the toast with a slight frown on his face. He had little appetite and could feel his stomach start to churn. He didn't feel like eating it yet, so he drank the tea first, slowly.
Draco ran his fingers through Harry's bedridden hair. "You should rest, darling." Draco took his tea and toast and placed them on the bedside table next to him. Harry complied and laid back down, settling into bed. Draco leaned over and kissed Harry on his forehead.
"You should get ready for work, Draco. You don't wanna be late," Harry said. Draco was never late to work and he didn't want to be the cause of Draco's tardiness now.
"I'm not going," Draco said. He rubbed his thumb back and forth on Harry's cheek gently. Harry frowned at him. He didn't want to be a burden and didn't want Draco to miss work because of him. Seeing the look on Harry's face, he added, "it's alright, Harry. I already notified our employers. You are my only patient today, so let me take care of you." He had a soft expression on his face as he said so. Harry opened his mouth to protest, but as a stern look appeared on his husband's face, he kept his mouth shut.
"Lay with me?" Harry asked instead. Draco smiled softly at him and moved to lay next to him. Harry shuffled closer, so he laid his head right over Draco's heart.
He felt a light kiss on the top of his head.
"Sleep, love," Draco said softly, pulling the covers up both of them. Harry sighed contently. He was surrounded by warmth and it felt nice and comforting.
"Love you." Harry responded in the same soft tone.
"Sap."
"You love it." Harry closed his eyes once more with a soft smile on his face
He heard his husband whisper, "love you too." before being lulled to sleep by the sound of Draco's steady heartbeat.
