The roads that Natasha was driving through to reach the other side of the mountain range were incredibly twisty and turny, and Eleanor also noticed that they were rather thin. Not to mention the fact that there was no barrier. It wasn't as though she didn't trust Nat's driving, she was even driving slower than usual due to the wet roads, it just made Eleanor feel uneasy as she looked out of the car window and saw that they could easily just plummet to their deaths. Call it instinct mixed with general exhaustion.
Nat seemed to notice the discomfort of the younger woman beside her, "You good?". Eleanor nodded with a small grimace as Nat rounded another one of the sharp bends, "Mhm", she felt her entire body freeze until they were on a straight bit of road again, but felt like letting out a groan when she saw another series of turns ahead. A lot of tire tracks also painted the roads, leaving Eleanor confused at how the locals may speed down as if they are in some sort of race.
"I know, these roads suck", Nat agreed and gave Eleanor's hand a swift squeeze, though she had to quickly yank her hand back to place back on the wheel as the turn she was about to take was a lot tighter than it looked, both women making a wincing sound as Nat had to quickly slow down, getting way too close to the edge of the road than she would have liked to. "My bad", she shrugged it off and continued driving, meanwhile Eleanor looked at her as though she was crazy.
Thankfully, those roads soon came to an end and they were back on regular terrain, a nice wide road under the wheels, the mountain getting further and further away as they neared their destination. The car was filled with nice chatter, with Eleanor suggesting various ways in which they might be able to make the small home nice and cosy with decorations, and Nat adding in her thoughts too.
Just as Nat was going to tell her wife that putting a fire pit in the middle of it would in fact burn the place down and not give it a 'nice ambience', the words that the reporter was saying on the radio caught their attention. Unlike Natasha, Eleanor couldn't speak Norwegian, but she could make out the words "Sokovia Accords", "Avengers", and "Steve Rogers, Natasha og Eleanor Romanoff". The mood in the car immediately died down as Natasha pulled the car to a stop.
Eleanor watched as she slumped back into her seat and took a final sip of her coffee. Natasha said nothing as she looked right past Eleanor and out the passenger side window. The younger woman found herself frowning slightly, it was almost as though she had turned invisible in Nat's eyes, but she followed her wife's gaze and found herself staring at a small metal caravan/motorhome. They had arrived. She had been so caught up in her conversation with Nat that she hadn't even noticed that they were getting close.
However, Eleanor's attention was solely on Nat whose mood had depleted exponentially since hearing the reporter on the radio. "Nat, honey. Are you okay?". Her head slowly turned to look at Eleanor and she planted a small smile on her face, "I'm okay", she nodded softly, though Eleanor could see right through it.
"I know you're not, you looked like you had seen a ghost just now, what's wrong?". She was right, Nat suddenly did not feel okay, but she didn't want to feel like a burden knowing that Eleanor had been anxious about everything too, so just pursed her lips and looked down at her lap, shaking her head slightly to try and deter the conversation from being on her any longer. Though Natasha's reaction to the question only made Eleanor's concern rise.
But it wasn't like she could do much. When Nat didn't want to talk pushing her would only make it worse. So, she took a firm grip on Nat's hand and interlaced their fingers, "You're not weak, okay? It's all very overwhelming it's okay to not be okay, I love you so much, you can talk to me whenever you need, yeah? There's no pressure".
There was silence in the car again before Nat squeezed her hand and whispered "I love you too". Eleanor had thought that that was all that she would get from Nat, so went to let go of her hand to undo her seatbelt, but when Natasha's grip increased and she looked up again she knew better than to continue her actions and so settled back into her seat again.
