Chihiro didn't really sleep the rest of the night. The trial was still fresh in his mind and so were the death of his classmates. All because of those secrets. All because of his secret.
It felt his fault. If didn't listen to that noise, he would have told Mondo his secret. He wouldn't have this almost friend relationship with Byakuya. Celeste may not have died. Toko may not have died. Somebody else probably would have. Unfortunately, it was too late to change everything now. No times for ifs.
When the morning announcement came, Chihiro stepped out of his bed and put on his clothes. He quickly went to the dining hall.
When he got there, he already saw almost everybody there. The only ones who were missing were Hiro and Hina. Surprisingly, Byakuya was not missing. Instead, he was sitting at one of the smaller tables, still refusing to sit with the rest of them.
Chihiro sat down at the large table in the middle with the rest. It didn't take long until Hiro came and only Hina was missing.
"I haven't seen Miss Asahina anywhere, normally she would have been here by now..." Hifumi said.
Just after Hifumi said that Hina walked in. She was looking almost dull and had red puffy eyes from what must have been crying.
There was an awkward feeling when somebody talked. It was clear that the events from the night had taken a toll on everybody here, even though Celeste and Toko weren't exactly the most liked students...
When everybody went to eat their breakfast, Chihiro moved from his place at the table and went to sit with Byakuya, much to the latter's displeasure.
"Why are you sitting here? Don't you want to sit with your friends?" Byakuya asked, very annoyed.
"I-um, I want to tell them... about my secret." Chihiro said softly, making sure that Byakuya was the only one who could hear him.
Byakuya take a sip of his coffee, which seemed to be his full breakfast, before talking.
"And you need to sit here to do that? If you want to tell them, do it. I, for one, do not care. The only who is stopping you is yourself. Just make sure you don't end up crying, it's pathetic and you told me you want to become the opposite," The taller boy said, his words missing the usual bite and instead sounding more like some form of encouragement in a very Byakuya way.
Just as Chihiro went to speak again, Taka spoke.
"Since the trial has ended, Monokuma must have opened up another floor! Now is the perfect time to explore the new floor!"
With that a few people started to leave, others began eating their breakfast a bit faster, or in Byakuya's case, drinking faster.
"I guess I will just tell them another time..." Chihiro said, not meeting Byakuya's eyes.
Even without looking at Byakuya's face, Chihiro could feel the disappointed look the heir was giving the smaller boy.
"When? Tomorrow? You should start taking initiative and stop waiting. This way you just look pathetic. If you want to become stronger, you should try. Not just wait for everything to align perfectly. You get nothing if you wait for it." Byakuya said, the bite back, but now mixed with an almost challenging tone.
Chihiro chose to accept the challenge.
"Why do you even care? I mean you talk about how pathetic I am, but still give me advice. Why?"
"You think I care? Oh, please. I am saying these things so you will just tell them. So, you stop bothering me. I am not saying these things because I care. I am saying these things so you will talk to anybody that's not me. Because for some reason you told me your secret and now think that we are friends. Well let me you that. We. Are. Not. Friends. Not now and probably never. Making friends while in a killing game is just stupid. People will betray you the moment you look away. Are you that dumb you can't understand that. Now. Go." Byakuya wasn't shouting, though for Chihiro it felt like he had.
Tears were spilling and Chihiro didn't try to stop them. Byakuya was right, they weren't friends. And they would probably never be. It was something that he knew but chose to ignore. And now here he was, crying like the weakling he was.
He didn't realise that quite some time went by until he felt a strong hand on his shoulder. A quick look identified it as Mondo's.
"Look, I don't know what that dickhead said, but he was probably wrong. He just likes making people feel bad. I don't know how you could spend a few minutes with him, let alone an hour."
"He's not that bad... I just think I said the wrong thing."
"If you say so... How 'bout we go explore the third floor together? And maybe you could tell me why you wanted to meet up with me."
Chihiro just gave a weak nod and followed Mondo to the third floor.
