The moment Byakuya saw who his target was, he knew that it wasn't random. While it technically could have been, the change was very low. He just happened to get the one person he threatened to kill multiple times? It was very obvious that he got Chihiro for a reason; so he could kill the other boy. As if. Byakuya wasn't going to fall for the Mastermind's trap. Unlike others, he actually had a brain.
So, he ignored the motive and his target. Well, that was his plan. What he didn't expect is that the boy would come looking for him... again. He now was wondering if he should just kill the boy and be done with it. At least then he could read in peace. Unfortunately, he didn't have a weapon on him. So, he talked to the boy.
"What do you want this time?"
"I-umm..."
"Well, spit it out. I would very much like to get back to my reading."
"I-I wanted to apologise... for what I said when we had our last conversation. About you not having to work for your title. It obviously upset you..."
"Was that everything?" Byakuya asked, already back to reading.
"W-what? Are you really not going to even respond to what I just said?"
"it's not like it's going to change anything. You still said those words. Not to mention, I don't care."
"You really don't, do you? I just- I don't understand. How can you not care about others? I mean, you don't even see us as other people..."
"I don't care, because I have no reason to. You are all strangers to me. If you die or live, it won't change a thing in my life. Caring won't change that. Even if I cared for you, you could still die." She still died.
"If everybody works together, than nobody would die!" Chihiro almost screamed.
"It never works like that, believe me. There is always someone who will betray that trust. Someone will kill, because they want to win. It has been like that for ages."
"Can you please stop acting like this is some game! People are dead!"
"It is a game. A deadly one at that, but it's still a game," Byakuya said, voice as calm as ever. A complete opposite to the other boy.
"Why? Why do you think that? Do you really believe that other people don't matter?"
"Hmm. Interesting questions. I believe I can answer the first one, but I'm not so sure if you want to hear it."
"Of course I do! I want to understand you. I-I really want to be friends with you..."
"Well, I don't. How many times am I going to have to tell you that?"
"Sorry... can you still answer me question, I really want to understand you better."
"It's not like I'm actually going to be able to read as long as you're here. So, I might as well tell you."
"The reason why I think this is a game is very easy. I've been in a game like this before."
"W-what?"
"Do you remember when I told you that I had to fight to get where I am today?" Chihiro nodded. "I meant that. To become heir, I was put against my siblings. We all had to complete multiple tests. These were simple and mostly intelligence based. However, the other tests... weren't. We were supposed to be dropped off at a private island to complete another set of tests. That never happened. Instead, one of my brothers started murdering some of my other siblings. I wasn't present for most of these, due to some circumstances. He ended up killing four, almost five, of my siblings."
"T-that's awful."
"It's life. Now, I will be going." With that, Byakuya closed his book and left.
Chihiro didn't seem to be following him. Good. He had hoped that with that story the other boy wouldn't try to befriend him again.
On his way to his room, he came across the very person he was looking to talk to; Kyoko Kirigiri.
"Byakuya," she greeted, coldly.
"Kyoko, just the person I was looking for."
"And why is that exactly?" Kyoko asked, raising one eyebrow.
"Maybe I just want to talk to you? Is it that unbelievable?"
"With you? Yes. So, why do you want to talk to me?"
"I guess you could say that I wanted to... warn you?"
"Warn me? And why should you do that?"
"People are beginning to suspect that there is a traitor and I'm inclined to agree..."
"And they suspect me, right? Otherwise you wouldn't tell me."
"Yes. You are by far the most suspicious here. We don't even know your talent after all."
"I'm not going to tell you."
"I wasn't asking now, was I? I just wanted to tell you this piece of information."
"Right. Now, will you go? You don't want to be seen with the 'traitor' now, do you?"
"Who says I'm accusing you? You being the traitor wouldn't make a lot of sense. The real traitor is never someone who is obviously different. Unfortunately, others don't think the same way."
"Is that all you wanted to say? I have other business to attend to."
"My, my. You really want me gone, Kyoko? I suppose I will leave you be. Though, keep an eye open, with you gone the trials wouldn't be nearly as entertaining..." having said what he wanted, Byakuya left.
While Kyoko was very suspicious, it was obvious she wasn't the spy. What she was exactly, Byakuya would find out. He did always enjoy solving mysteries.
Speaking of mysteries, it seemed like he had found another. When he opened his door, he found a letter on the other side. He opened it.
Byakuya,
I have found something that may interest you.
Meet me in the nurse's office at 2am. Don't bring anybody with you.
Really? As if he was going to fall for this. It was obviously a trap.
Though... he could go. After all, he would love to see the face on this person when their plan fails.
So, it was decided. He would go meet up with this person, though they won't like the outcome...
