"Save your tears for another day"
———————————————

Vance grazed the swollen skin covering the face of his boyfriend, frowning softly when the boy underneath his fingertips winced and hissed in slight pain. The one time Vance wasn't there, of course something was bound to happen.

Bruce, along with his best friend Finney Blake, had been practicing for their upcoming baseball game when everything had went down.

Finn threw the baseball towards the boy in front of him, smiling slyly as the ball curved slightly upwards and the other missed hitting it. Bruce muttered something underneath his breath, retrieving the ball from the ground before throwing it back to the other boy.

"God, I almost forgot how great your arm is. Mint, definitely mint." Bruce tapped his bat on the ground twice, smiling at Finn to signal he was ready for another try.

Finn twirled the retrieved baseball in his hands, feeling each curve and wilted piece of fabric it had before throwing it towards Bruce. There was a loud crack, the baseball flying upwards and behind Finn's back immediately afterwards.

"And I have a great arm." Finn watched in awe as the ball soared through the sky before softly landing on the ground and rolling away. Bruce smiled at the boy, proud of having hit the ball as far as he did. Finn turned to leave so he could recover the baseball, stopping and turning back around when his arm was grabbed softly.

"I'll get it."

Bruce jogged over to where the ball hand landed, unaware of the two boys hiding amongst the bushes.

"Ah, here we go." Bruce picked the ball up, smiling at it as he rolled it about in his palm. He jumped, startled, when one of the two boys came out of hiding.

"Well, if it isn't Mr. Golden Boy. Don't tell me you're over there playing fairies with Faggy Finney." Matty made a childish face, laughing when he turned around and spotted Finn twirling Bruce's bat around. Bruce narrowed his eyes at him, angered at the way he had talked about his best friend. "He isn't- what the fuck is your problem." Matty smiled, taking a step towards him before seemingly nodding at something behind the boy's back. Before Bruce could try and figure out what the nod was signaling to, his arms were grabbed and tightly placed behind his back.

"Seems like we're going to have to treat you the same way we treat the little fairy over there." Bruce glared at the boy in front of him, trying his best to free himself of the grip on his arms. "Let me the fuck go." Matty and Buzz laughed, shaking their heads simultaneously.

Bruce went to say something again, gasping harshly when a fist collided with his stomach. Multiple came after that. Then the hands traveled towards his face, covering the skin on it different shades of purples, blues, and yellows.

"What's taking him so long."

Finn, still having the baseball bat tightly gripped in his hand, started to make his way over to where Bruce had disappeared to. His pace quickened when he heard a collection of grunts and what sounded like fists colliding with something. Finn knew the sound all too well.

Tightening the grip of the baseball bat in his hand even more, Finn began to run. He didn't stop until he was right in front of the three boys, anger instantly engulfing his body whole when he saw his best friend beaten and bloody with the other two boys smiling down at him.

"Fancy seeing you two here. Sadly, I'll have to make sure this is the last time you'll ever step foot on this field again."

The two boys turned around, smirking when they saw Finn. What they didn't see is the bat he was holding, white knuckles gripping it as if it was his lifeline.

Buzz went to respond to Finn's comment, eyes widening when a bat came crashing down atop his head. The boy screamed in agony, grabbing at his- now, crimson stained head. Matty attempted to go towards him, stopping with a look of terror when Finn swung the bat in front of his face, testing him to see if he'd try to go to the boy despite it.

Finn smiled when the boy backed away, kicking the boy on the floor towards him and motioning with his head for them to leave. The two boys wasted no time doing so, legs carrying them faster than what was natural.

Bruce groaned, the metallic smell of blood seeping into his nose and out through the surrounding air around them. Finn kneeled towards him, grimacing at the sight.

"I'll call Vance."

——————————————

So now here they were, two boys engulfed in each other as one of them grazes their fingers over the other's wounds.

"I still can't believe Finn hit those bastards with that damn bat." Vance chuckled lightheartedly, earning a soft smile from the boy laying atop of him. "I'm just glad he didn't get hurt. Thanks for coming by the way." Vance looked down at Bruce, confusion encasing his facial features. "You don't have to thank me. Y'know I'd come running for ya."

Bruce blushed at the statement, burying his head more into the boy's chest.

Somehow, his wounds didn't hurt as bad as before.
