Liam POV

“Dude, I really am sorry.” Zayn apologized again to Louis for the hundredth time.

“I know you are, but it was my fault.”Louis laughed

“I guess that’s true. Maybe you did deserve it.” Zayn joked.

“Plus, my surgeon did an exceptional job.”

“As far as I’m concerned there will be little to no scarring.” She said in a professional type voice. We were all sitting around the huge wooden table in the Horan’s back garden, eating crepes that Niall’s housekeeper/maid/whatever she was made us. I laughed when I saw Kayleigh use her banana to push up the glasses that were sliding down her nose. She hadn’t put in her contacts yet.

“Please tell me you were the only one who saw that.” She said looking around

“Your secret’s safe with me.” I chuckled.

“I’m just so tired!” she confessed to me “Cara and Harry were whispering sweetly to each other all night. It was adorable, but the space between the futon and the floor was just too much to keep the sound from reaching my ears.” she rested her forehead on my shoulder and took another bite of her banana. Just this little notion was making my hands sweaty. I made eye contact with Zayn and he covertly signaled to the kitchen.

“Alright. Lay it on me. What’s up now?” he asked leaning against the huge marble counter, once we were alone in the kitchen.

“Well. Nothing too much more than the usual, but the dream I had last night, well, I guess a nightmare, really freaked me out.”

“What happened in it?”

“I was in English class with Mr. Derby and it was boring and all then out of nowhere this dragon barges in and starts setting everything on fire and stuff. After that we were all running away obviously.

“Obviously” he interjected, agreeing

“and the dragon grabs Kayleigh, well two Kayleighs. Like one is the 8th grade Kayleigh with glasses and a Lisa Frank binder version and the other version is the really hot Kayleigh from that night in the hot tub. And anyway the dragon is about to eat them both.”

“Uh oh.”

“Yeah, so it sees me and is like, you have to choose! Your friend or your girlfriend!”

“Uh oh.”

“Exactly, so I had to choose and I couldn’t! I woke up before I chose, as I’m sure you remember”

“Uh oh.”

“I KNOW UH OH! It’s bad news! Why couldn’t I just choose?”

“Because you love them both.”

“Well yeah, thanks for that. Now I know exactly what to do. Awesome.”

“Hey don’t get feisty with me, mister. What I mean is, you can’t have them both. The 8th grade, glasses wearing, Lisa Frank loving Kayleigh is dead and gone. Metaphorically of course, by ways of a dragon. But still, she isn’t that girl anymore. You need to sort out how you feel about the new Kayleigh. She’s growing up.” He was totally right.

“Yeah. I know. I can’t decide if I like this new direction she’s going in…I mean, I know she’s at least 80% still the best friend I need and love, but what about the next time she meets a ‘Louis’ she was so easily swayed by him. And DO NOT” I shook his shoulders “DO.  NOT. Let on that you know this, but she cried at my house for two days after Louis broke it off.”

“What!? I thought they said it was mutual and wasn’t really working.” Zayn asked confused

“Yeah, that was just Louis being nice enough to word it that way. She really didn’t want to break up. In fact I wouldn’t be surprised if she was still into him.”

“Uh oh.”

“Dude,”

“Sorry. That really sucks though, man. I’m sorry. I can’t say I know how you feel but I know it sucks.”

“It does suck.” I said looking out through the glass door at Kayleigh braid Cara’s hair and laugh at something Sadie whispered to her. “It really does.”
