Stella been staying at the farmhouse for the past few days while on her winter break, which you think would be a good thing. But she and August have strangely become invested in family history all of a sudden, asking all sorts of questions about the Walkers and Hoyt. And when they aren't asking questions, they suddenly have a reason to not participate in family stuff, especially Stella. I've tried not to think too hard about it and just pass it off as her trying to keep her mind off what's been bothering her lately or college. But it is all rather strange.
Bacon is sizzling in the pan as Cordell is cooking breakfast and I set the table. "Ah-ha-ha. There they are. Good morning to you. Slept late enough, you think?" Cordell said to the kids as they came down the stairs.
"It is 7:30 and I have not had any coffee. Can we take it down like ten percent, Dad?" Stella pleaded, making her father chuckle. "What exactly is... all this?" August asked, looking at all the food as Cordell moves the bacon from a pan to a plate to cool off.
"Well, your father had an idea. He had a lot of ideas. I kept him on planet Earth. You're welcome." I said, patting August's shoulder as he takes a seat at the counter.
"Yeah. This is the start of our family makeup day for the bust that was your winter break. And Stella, you're back off to college tomorrow. Augie, you're starting your final semester of senior year, So, I figured, you know, we got to, we got to rally before... back to reality." Cordell explained as Stella pour herself a cup of coffee.
"I wouldn't call it a complete bust. I caught up on some sleep." Stella said, going to sit with her brother. "Also, is this bacon fair game?" August asked.
"Okay, that-that seems like a bit of selective memory, Stella. I mean, you had strep when we wanted to cut down the Christmas tree, you bailed out on that Swirth & Moore museum thing at UCAS. I mean, we didn't even make it to a single movie in the theaters. What is happening to us?" Cordell asked.
"And believe me when I tell you, that list started out much longer." I said to the kids. "Uh, guys? Uh, smoke?" August said, pointing to one of the pans that Cordell was neglecting.
"Oh! Yeah. Yep. Yep, it's okay." Cordell said, turning off the stove. "I got it. Let me just... I got it." I said, rushing to stop the biscuits from burning down the kitchen.
"Well, is it really a family makeup day without burnt biscuits?" Stella asked and Cordell gives her a disappointing look. "Oof." August muttered, waving the smoke out of his face as I tried to make it dissipate.
"Because... this sounds great, Dad... but I promised Augie that we would meet up with some ROTC guys at UCAS today. Just so he can, you know, get a taste of what that's like." Stella said and I could practically see the excitement draining from Cordell's face.
"Yeah. They won't be free as much when classes start, so..." August added. "Yeah, fine. Fine. That-That's fine." Cordell said, breaking my heart. He was so looking forward to today just for the kids to immediately dash all his plans.
"Just please do me a favor and be home for dinner by 6:00? I was hoping the four of us could spend some family time together this break? You know, maybe do one nice thing." Cordell told them.
"Dinner sounds great, Dad." Stella said, standing up from her stool and kissing him on the cheek. "All right." August said, getting up and following his sister back upstairs, leaving Cordell and I with all this food to eat by ourselves... again.
