Sunday mid-morning, Tae sends me a fretful text.

Birdie, we never get the lasers and the jackets right on the same take. This might be the first time BTS really fails on stage in America.

No, you guys will pull it off. I have complete faith in you. Any normal group wouldn't even try under these conditions, but you guys will be amazing.

I don't know. We'll see.

Well, just know that on the 0.1% chance that it all falls apart tonight, I will still love you just as much as ever. But I'm not worried. You guys will do what you always do, because you're bulletproof. 🥰🤩✨❤️💜❤️

Thanks. I love you. See you tonight, after the show.

Love you too, Tae. You're my rock star! 😘

I set my phone down to finish having my brunch, shaking my head a little bit. 'OK, so I lied to him a little bit. I think there's more like a 5% chance it will fall apart. Maybe 8%. But for fuck's sake, two of them are recovering from covid and one has an injured hand, so...' I shake my head again. 'They're so hard on themselves even when they do near-perfect performances. I really, REALLY hope it goes well tonight!"

I look around the house, wondering what to do while I wait for the performance. 'If we're going to have everyone over for a party tomorrow, I should find a Korean market and get some good kimchi and side dishes. I could buy real galbi and brisket, too. Do we have enough dishes to have a sit-down dinner? I wonder if Namjoon's girlfriend will be here?' I open the cupboard to see how we're supplied for dinnerware.

After a quick swim and shower, I head to the Wmart downtown to shop. I go a little crazy, buying enough meat to feed an actual army, bottles of all kinds of different sauces, plus some beautiful prawns that were flown in this morning, according to the guy at the meat counter. Piles of mung bean sprouts, garlic, cucumbers, spinach, potatoes, radishes, onions, and other veggies, plus sesame oil, sesame seeds, soy sauce, and gochujjang: I have decided to make a bunch of side dishes today and let them steep for tomorrow. I also buy chopsticks, little snap-lock containers to put the side dishes in overnight, ten of the little steel rice bowls like they use at restaurants and a rice cooker, plus five of the compartmented dishes for serving banchan. For dessert, I grab several kinds of fruit, a couple different types of ice cream bars, and two trays of sweet rice cakes. Finally, I add two 12 packs of Korean beer.

The cart is so heavy I can barely push it up to the cash register, by the time I'm done. The cashier's eyes bug out a bit as she's ringing up my purchases. "You must be having a party!" she says.

I laugh and nod. "Yes, I will have lots of hungry people to feed!" The grocery bags and boxes fill up the back seat of the SUV, including the floor, and the trunk.

Back at the rental, I turn on the big screen TV and watch the guys being their usual charming selves on the red carpet, patiently answering dumb questions from American entertainment "reporters." I roll my eyes so much that I can hear my mom's voice: "They're going to get stuck that way if you keep doing that!"
