Emily and I want to take a quick road trip before tonight's festivities, so I chivvy Tae out of bed at 10:30 a.m. and drive him back to the hotel. He seems much more relaxed for this concert than he was in LA, approaching it with as much anticipation as nervousness, which makes my heart glad. "I can't wait to see you guys do your thing, tonight, love!" I tell him as I drop him off. "I'll be the one screaming her head off! Look for me!" He laughs and leans in for another kiss before fixing his mask across his mouth.
"Love you, Birdie. See you tonight!"
"Love you, too, V Taehyung. More than I can say!" I blow him a bunch of kisses as he gets out of the car, and then shoot him a series of finger hearts as he walks backward through the gate, laughing.
Em and I are on the open highway, headed east, within a half hour.
"I still can't believe that you've never been to Grand Canyon, sis," she says, shaking her head.
"Hey, I'm a busy woman!" I tell her.
"Yeah, but you went to college in southern California. It's not that far away."
"Hey, I was a busy woman!" We both laugh. "Shoot, Em, I think I should have grabbed some breakfast for the road. I'm really hungry now."
"Um-hm. Me too. I thought I would never want to eat again, after dinner and shakes last night."
"That was good, wasn't it?" I pause thoughtfully. "Where can we get some prime rib for breakfast?" I joke.
"There's probably a 24-hour casino buffet around here somewhere..." She wrinkles her nose at me, and I chuckle. We drive past a highway sign advertising the restaurants off the next exit, and she says, "Oh, hey, there's a tapas and sushi place! Let's stop!"
"Oh, yes, Spanish sushi is my favorite! What the hell?"
"Try it, you might like it!" she says, and we giggle.
I drive along in silence for a few minutes, and then Emily says, "Taehyung seems really nice, and you guys are super-cute together. Are you going to marry him?"
My heart jolts in my chest, and tears fill my eyes. "He keeps asking me that, too, sissy." I sniffle and she looks over, surprised. I exhale loudly, tears now streaming down my cheeks. "Sorry, just a second." I turn on the emergency lights and pull over on the shoulder of the highway, hyperventilating.
"Shit, sorry! I didn't mean to trigger you! Sorry!" Her eyes are wide with worry. I smile at her through my panic and nod, then get out of the car and do jumping jacks by the side of the road.
As I climb back in, Emily says, "Is this how you react when he mentions it, too?"
I laugh ruefully, trying to breathe normally. "Pretty much, yeah. But he still loves me. Amazing, hm?" I take a couple more deep breaths. "He's absolutely wonderful, and I love him more than I could ever explain, even to myself." I look over at her. "I need to get my head on straight, before I ruin this thing that we have."
