Soonyoung stared at the closed hatch in front of him. His eyes stung and his heart ached. He didn't think he would ever have to shoot one of his friends. His mind knew it was the right thing to do but oh god did his heart disagree. He needed to pull himself together. He needed to be strong for the rest of the group but it was so hard to do that when he knew he would never see Wonwoo again.
He stood up and tried to compose himself as best as he could before turning around. Y/n was sobbing uncontrollably into Mingyu's chest who was holding back his own tears, while Seungcheol tried to offer consoling words to her. Everyone's faces were solemn, realising what had happened. I think for a few of them, the severity of the world they now lived in only just kicked in. Very quickly realising how easily someone's life could be taken away.
This world was cruel and unforgiving.
"We need to leave right now otherwise he would have died for nothing, so let's continue to live for him, okay?" Soonyoung spoke up, his voice cracking mid sentence, his throat tight. The group tried their best to push their emotions aside so they could make it safely away from the horde that was still in the building below them.
The building next to them was a little smaller in height and there was around a two meter gap between both buildings. Due to the building being lower than the one they were in, the gap wasn't as hard to jump across.
They each carefully jumped over the gap one by one.
"There's another ladder over here going down the side of the building" Junhui whisper yelled as he bent over the edge of the building, ushering everyone over with his arm. They all rushed over to him as quietly as they could. They scanned the area, which still had a few zombies around but not nearly as many as there were in the warehouse, and decided it was safe enough to climb down the ladder. Once again, they took turns climbing down. Once everyone was down safely, they ran off as far as they could away from the warehouse and the horde inside it."Where are we going? I don't think I can run anymore..." Chan called out from the back of the group, slowing down to a brisk walk, putting his hands on his hips. The group had been running for around half an hour and honestly none of them knew where they were going, they just wanted to get away. Away from everything. Everyone else slowed down as well and eventually stopped.
"There's a small cabin that I know is safe, it's not in a populated area so I doubt there will be a lot of zombies around, we could go there but it'll take a while to get there on foot." Seungcheol said.Soonyoung stared at him for a few seconds before nodding,
"We don't have anywhere else to go so that's probably our best bet at finding a safe place.." he mumbled, not sure if he should be the one they listen to anymore. He felt like he was only putting them in danger and felt like he couldn't protect them anymore. Not after what happened at the warehouse. Not after what happened to Wonwoo. He felt like it was all his fault."We'll take breaks on our way there and we'll have to find somewhere to sleep for the next night as well, it'll probably take us over a day before we reach the cabin.." Seungcheol informed, everyone giving him small nods, most of them didn't know him that well and honestly didn't know if they could trust that he could keep them safe but at this point they didn't really have many other options.
As they started on their journey to their hopefully new base, they all remained silent, each of them grieving the loss of their friend in their separate ways. Although Seungcheol, Jeoghan and Joshua hadn't really known Wonwoo that well, they still acknowledged the loss of someone they shared a space with and acknowledged that the people around them lost someone that they held close to their hearts. It was sad but there was nothing they could do but move on.
Y/n walked at the back of the group, not wanting to be around anyone else. She didn't want them to look at her, she didn't deserve to be acknowledged. She knew it was her fault. Everything was her fault. Maybe if she had just let him do what he wanted with her and didn't pull that trigger, everyone would be okay right now. Wonwoo would be alive and everyone else wouldn't be grieving their friend. Her leg hurt like hell, but her heart hurt more and now she was the reason that the people she cared about the most were hurting too.
